Harry "Apple Cheeks" Lumley (born November 11, 1926 in Owen Sound , Ontario ; † September 13, 1998 ) was a Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who worked for the New York Rangers , Detroit Red Wings , Chicago Black Hawks , Toronto Maple from 1943 to 1960 Leafs and Boston Bruins played in the National Hockey League .
Career
During his junior years he played with the Barrie Colts in the OHA . At the age of 15 he signed a contract with the Detroit Red Wings from the National Hockey League . He got his first chance when the league had to replace many players who moved into World War II .
In the 1943/44 season he started with two defeats and 13 goals conceded, so that he was sent to the Indianapolis Capitals in the AHL . Since the New York Rangers had a bottleneck in the goalkeeping position, he was loaned to New York for a game. After he began the 1944/45 season in Indianapolis, he made his breakthrough in the NHL mid-season. He reached the final series of the Stanley Cup with the wings . After three defeats at the beginning, the Leafs already looked like the sure winner. After a win in Game 4, he brought the Wings 3: 3 with two shutouts . Despite a good performance in the decisive game, the Wings lost 2-1.
Although the Red Wings were among the best teams in the NHL at the time, it was not until the 1949/50 season that he could win the Stanley Cup. With three shutouts and a goal against goals of 1.85 in the playoffs, he was one of the pillars of his team in this successful season.
Since they had a very talented young goalkeeper in Detroit with Terry Sawchuk , Lumley was given together with Jack Stewart to the Chicago Black Hawks , one of the weakest teams of those years. In return, Gaye Stewart came to the Black Hawks. Here he stayed two seasons before moving to the Toronto Maple Leafs for Al Rollins, among others . Here he had his best years and could also win the Vezina Trophy . A year with 13 shutouts was an unusually good result in these years, which was only exceeded again over 15 years later. In the summer of 1956, the Leafs and Eric Nesterenko sold him to the Chicago Black Hawks for $ 40,000, but Lumley refused to return. He preferred to play with the Buffalo Bisons in the AHL.
Only at the end of the 1957/58 season he returned to the NHL when the Boston Bruins urgently needed a goalkeeper due to injuries. In Boston, he became the second goalkeeper in NHL history to reach 300 career victories. He played there until 1960.
In 1980 he was honored with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame . He died of a heart attack in 1998 .
