Thomas Patrick Barrasso (born March 31, 1965 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is a former American ice hockey goalkeeper of Italian descent who worked for the Buffalo Sabers , Pittsburgh Penguins , Ottawa Senators , Carolina Hurricanes , Toronto Maple Leafs and St. Louis from 1983 to 2003 Blues played in the National Hockey League . Most recently, he was head coach of the Sheffield Steelers in the Elite Ice Hockey League in the 2018/19 season .

Career

Tom Barrasso grew up in a working-class neighborhood and learned to play ice hockey on an outdoor surface. As the goalkeeper of Acton-Boxborough High, he also moved into the field of vision of the scouts and played for the US team at the Junior World Championships in 1983. The Buffalo Sabers got him with the fifth pick in the first round in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft . Almost all colleges in the United States would have loved Barrasso for their ice hockey team, but he chose Providence College in Rhode Island. However, since the Sabers immediately brought him into the NHL, the move to college never materialized.

Together with Bob Sauvé he was in the goal of the Sabers in the 1983/84 season and his first season was an outstanding one. He led the Sabers into the playoffs and was awarded the Calder Memorial Trophy for his great rookie season , here he had prevailed against Steve Yzerman . Of course he was also part of the NHL All-Rookie Team . His performance was not only outstanding for a rookie, but also won the Vezina Trophy as the best goalkeeper of the NHL season . Only Frank Brimsek (1939) and Tony Esposito (1970) had previously achieved this feat . At that time Barrasso, who now also played for the US national ice hockey team, was considered the best goalkeeper in the world.

A number of very good years in Buffalo followed, in which he won the William M. Jennings Trophy with Bob Sauvé in 1985 for the lowest goal conceded and twice (1985 and 1988) came second in the choice for the Vezina Trophy .

The Pittsburgh Penguins were a team in the 1988/89 season that had a very strong offensive around Mario Lemieux , but still had great weaknesses on the defensive. In November 1988, they were able to agree on an exchange deal with the Sabers, in which Barrasso moved to Pittsburgh. The deal worked for the Penguins and so Barrasso was the great support when they were able to bring the Stanley Cup to Pittsburgh in 1991 and 1992 . The 1992/93 season was also a very successful one for him and for the third time he had to be satisfied with second place in the race for the Vezina Trophy .

A foot injury cost him almost the entire 1994/95 season and in the 1996/97 season he was only able to play five games due to a shoulder injury. But every time Barrasso returned and was able to draw attention to himself with impressive performances. In March 2000 he was given to the Ottawa Senators .

He suspended the 2000/01 season , but returned to the NHL a year later. The final phase of his career was associated with many changes. He celebrated his comeback for the Carolina Hurricanes but moved to the Toronto Maple Leafs after the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, where he was also used in a game . This was followed by six more games for the St. Louis Blues in the 2002/03 season , before he signed a pro forma contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins for a day to end his career as a Penguin.

He returned to the Carolina Hurricanes in September 2007 as Director of Goaltender Development. In his position he was responsible for the training and development of the goalkeepers from the organization of the Hurricanes, who played in the minor leagues . For the 2009/10 season he was hired by the Hurricanes as an assistant coach, where he will remain until 2012.

At the beginning of the 2012/13 season he moved to the Kontinental Hockey League as an assistant coach at Metallurg Magnitogorsk . Two years later Barrasso returned to KHL ( HC Slovan Bratislava ), but left the team on October 31, 2015 to become head coach of HC Valpellice .
