Robert David "Bobby" Smith (born February 12, 1958 in North Sydney , Nova Scotia ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player (center) and current coach who worked for the Minnesota North Stars and the Montréal Canadiens in National Hockey from 1978 to 1993 League played.
Career
As a junior he played in the OHA for the Ottawa 67’s . After an outstanding season with 192 points, he was selected in the 1978 NHL Amateur Draft as the first overall by the Minnesota North Stars . He had also played for Canada in the Junior World Championship that year.
Immediately in the 1978/79 season he made the breakthrough with the North Stars and with 30 goals and 74 points he won the Calder Memorial Trophy as the best rookie. In his third year in Minnesota, he made it to the Stanley Cup Finals with the team , but there the New York Islanders were not to be overcome during this time.
During the 1983/84 season , the North Stars gave him to the Montréal Canadiens . There he was able to win his first and only Stanley Cup in 1986 together with the outstanding rookie goalkeeper Patrick Roy . After a defeat in the Cup Finals in 1989, he moved back to the Minnesota North Stars for the 1990/91 season .
Back in Minnesota he was able to move into the finals one more time, this time it was the Pittsburgh Penguins around Mario Lemieux who prevented his second Stanley Cup victory. He stayed with the North Stars for two more years and reached the 1,000 point mark as the 32nd NHL player . In 1993 he ended his active career.
From 1997 to 2000 he was General Manager at Phoenix Coyotes . Since 2003 he has owned the Halifax Mooseheads , an ice hockey franchise from the QMJHL . In October 2010, he took over as head coach from Cam Russell at Mooseheads, who remained with the franchise as general manager.
