Rick DiPietro (born September 19, 1981 in Winthrop , Massachusetts ) is a former American ice hockey goalkeeper who was last under contract with the Charlotte Checkers in the American Hockey League and previously 13 years in the National Hockey League - organization of the New York Islanders spent. Largely due to enormous injury problems, DiPietro failed during his active career to meet the expectations placed on him as the overall first in the NHL Entry Draft 2000 and to establish himself permanently as a top performer.

Career

Rick DiPietro played in the youth program of the U18 national team of the USA from 1997 . In his sophomore year he performed excellently and won 22 of his 30 games. In 1999 he went to Boston University and played for their ice hockey team. There, too, he performed very well and was selected as Rookie of the Year as well as the Second Allstar Team of the Hockey East Conference of the NCAA . In his last game he set an NCAA record when he was able to keep 77 shots in a playoff game over 123 minutes, showing as many saves in one game as no other goalkeeper. Nevertheless, his team lost 3-2 in the end.

Just three months later, Rick DiPietro was the first player to be selected in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft and was considered one of the greatest goalkeeping talents at the time, which is underlined by the fact that he is the first goalkeeper ever to be number one in the NHL Entry Draft was selected. It was the New York Islanders who decided to draft it. He was immediately accepted into the team's NHL squad and, at the age of 19, played 20 games in his first season. He was also used in the International Hockey League . After the season he was allowed to drive to the world championship with the US team .

In the 2001/02 season he was only used by the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in the AHL , as the Islanders had two experienced and established goalkeepers in the squad with Garth Snow and Chris Osgood . In the next season, DiPietro played again in the NHL , came to a total of ten missions, but remained in the AHL roster of Bridgeport, where he played his best season with a goals against goals of 2.14 and a catch rate of 92.4 percent. After Chris Osgood had left the team, DiPietro was used as a regular goalkeeper in the 2003/04 season and reached the playoffs with his team, but failed in the first round. In 2006 he missed the round of the 8 best teams in the Eastern Conference.

In September 2006, DiPietro signed an NHL record contract with the Islanders until 2021 with a reported total salary of $ 67.5 million. During the 2006/07 season he finally established himself among the best goalkeepers in the NHL and was always an important source of support for the team in the fight for the playoff places. After a few minor injuries, however, he fell out of several games during the hot phase of the season in March 2007 after he collided with an opponent and suffered from a concussion. Substitute goalkeeper Mike Dunham was unable to compensate for DiPietro's failure and the Islanders lost touch with the playoffs. Without DiPietro, but with Wade Dubielewicz in goal, the Islanders made it to a playoff spot. DiPietro was still represented by Dubielewicz in the first playoff game against the Buffalo Sabers , but could be used again in the second game.

In the 2007/08 season , DiPietro was able to build on his good performance and was invited to the NHL All-Star Game . In the second half of the season, however, his performances were no longer constant; in March 2008 he had to end the season prematurely because of a hip injury. On January 8, 2010 DiPietro gave his NHL comeback after a year-long injury break in the 3: 4 defeat in the game against the Dallas Stars . He had previously gained match practice with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in the American Hockey League .

Since the beginning of the 2012/13 season , the players union and team owners in any renewal of the NHL Collective Bargaining Agreement could agree in 2005, took place on 15 September lockout of the players from their team owner and thus the lockout . On October 10, 2012, he moved as the second NHL professional after Matt D'Agostini to SC Riessersee in the 2nd Bundesliga ice hockey , but was only used in one game. After the end of the lockout in January 2013, he returned to the Islanders, but was also unable to convince with twelve goals conceded in three appearances. He was then sent to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in the AHL and completed a total of 18 games there over the course of the season. In July 2013, the New York Islanders paid off his contract early (buy out) .

In October 2013 DiPietro signed a trial contract ( try-out ) with the Charlotte Checkers , for which he then played five games in the AHL with a catastrophic goal average of 5.28 and a catch rate of 84.6% and then at his own request from his Contract was released.
