Erik Robert Johnson (born March 21, 1988 in Bloomington , Minnesota ) is an American ice hockey player . Since February 2011, the defender has been under contract with the Colorado Avalanche in the National Hockey League , after having previously spent almost three and a half years with the St. Louis Blues , which selected him in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft as the first overall position . With the US national team , he won the silver medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics .
Career
At the age of 15 Johnson played in his home town of Minnesota in 2003 at the Academy of Holy Angels in Richfield and contributed with his 13 goals and 34 points to win the Conference Championships. He also attended the USA Hockey Select 15 Camp that season .
From the 2004/05 season he took part in the USA Hockey National Team Development Program and played in the junior league North American Hockey League , where he came in 31 games to six goals and six assists . In April 2005 he took part in the U18 World Championship with the national junior team and won the gold medal.
In 2005/06 Johnson initially played again in the NAHL and scored 15 points in eleven league games, but played mainly in the U18 class of the US National Development Program during the season, where he also played with his offensive style and 34 points in 36 Play could convince. In April 2006, Johnson again took part in the U18 Junior World Championship and, as the second best scorer among the defenders, had a large share in winning the title again.
In June he was selected as the first talent in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft by the St. Louis Blues . But he decided not to switch to the NHL immediately after the draft, but first to study at the University of Minnesota . He played for their ice hockey team during the 2006/07 season and was also able to convince there. In January 2007 he played at the U20 World Cup and won the bronze medal with the US team. He was also elected to the All-Star Team and named the best defender of the tournament.
In April 2007 Johnson finally signed a contract with St. Louis Blues and played a month later at the World Cup for the senior team. He made his NHL debut in the fall at the start of the 2007/08 season . In his second game, on October 6, 2007, he scored his first goal with the winning goal in the game against the Los Angeles Kings . During the season he had to pause for a few games due to a broken foot, but was still able to score five goals and prepare 28 in 69 games, placing him in second place among the rookie defenders.
Before the 2008/09 season he took part in a golf tournament with the Blues. In the process, he tore several ligaments when his right foot got stuck between the gas and brake pedals of the golf cart . In November 2008 his knee was operated on and Johnson missed the entire season. In the 2009/10 season he scored 10 goals in 79 games and gave 29 assists. With 39 points scorer, he was the Blues defender with the most points.
On February 19, 2011, the defender was transferred to the Colorado Avalanche in a swap from the Blues along with Jay McClement and a first-round draft pick for the 2011 NHL Entry Draft , St. Louis received in return defender Kevin Shattenkirk , attacker Chris Stewart as well a second-round draft pick for the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. Johnson completed 22 more games for the Denver franchise in the 2010/11 season , with the right-handed shooter scoring ten points . In addition, he ran in some games as assistant captain of the Avalanche.
At the 2013 World Cup in Stockholm and Helsinki , Johnson was again part of the US national team and won the bronze medal with it. He also represented his home country at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey .
