Joonas Donskoi (born April 13, 1992 in Raahe ) is a Finnish ice hockey player of Russian origin who has been under contract with the Colorado Avalanche from the National Hockey League since July 2019 and plays there in the position of right winger . The Finn had previously worked for the San Jose Sharks for four years .
Career
Donskoi learned to play ice hockey in Teräs-Kiekko's youth department . He was part of the club's ice hockey department until he was 15, before joining the offspring of the first division club Kärpät Oulu . There the striker played through all the youth teams from the U16s to the U20s, with whom he won the Finnish A-Junior Championship in his last junior year, by summer 2010. In the same season , the 17-year-old winger made his debut for Kärpät's professional team in the SM-liiga . He had scored four scorer points in 18 missions and was also used for the Finnish U20 national team in the second-rate Mestis . In the summer of 2010 Donskoi was finally entitled to stand for election in the KHL Junior Draft and NHL Entry Draft . First he was in junior KHL Draft in 2010 to 13th overall position of Avangard Omsk of the Kontinental Hockey League selected and a few days later in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft in the fourth round at the 99th place of Florida Panthers of the National Hockey League pulled .
At the beginning of the 2010/11 season , Donskoi had sprung from the junior classes and went into the second year of his three-year contract signed the previous year with the professional team. In his first full professional season, the rookie was able to impress with 27 scorer points in 52 games. He was able to almost confirm these figures in the 2011/12 season , before the 2012/13 season, beset by injuries, represented a step backwards. The striker was only able to play 31 games due to a wound on his wrist and only collected 14 points.
The attacker came back all the more injured in the 2013/14 season. With 26 assists and 37 scorer points, he set new personal bests and celebrated his first win of the Finnish championship at the end of the season with a 4-3 win in the final series over Tappara Tampere . In the play-offs , Donskoi fell short of expectations with six points. The 2014/15 season showed the same picture as the previous season. As the team's top scorer, Donskoi set new records in all offensive categories, while Kärpät dominated the main round and went into the play-offs as the favorite. Led by Donskoi, Kärpät defended the championship title in the re-edition of the previous year's final. In addition, the winger was awarded the Jari Kurri trophy as the best player in the play-offs and was appointed to the league's all-star team.
The achievements of the now 23-year-old in the past two years had drawn the attention of the National Hockey League franchises to him again. Since the Florida Panthers' transfer rights had already expired in the summer of 2012 - an agreement between the two parties had failed because Donskoi did not see himself as mature enough for the NHL at the time - the striker was able to negotiate freely with all teams as a free agent . Ultimately, the San Jose Sharks secured the services of the Finn for the next two years. Although his entry contract was valid for both the NHL and the lower class American Hockey League , Donskoi made the jump into the NHL roster of the Sharks and completed 76 games in the regular season . With 36 scorer points, he found himself among the top ten players within the team. In the playoffs Donskoi reached the final series of a championship for the third year in a row, but failed there with the team at the Pittsburgh Penguins . After a weaker year with only 17 points, the Finn improved again and set a personal best in his fourth year in the league with 37 points. Nevertheless, the Sharks refrained from further engagement of the attacker, so that he switched to the Colorado Avalanche as a free agent in July 2019 .
International
At the international level, Donskoi was active for the Finnish junior national teams from 2007. For the first time he took part in an international tournament with the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2008 . This was followed by participation in the European Youth Olympic Winter Festival 2009 in Poland . There he won the bronze medal with the team. In the same year he played again in the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2009 . The striker was able to win another bronze medal at the 2010 U18 Junior World Championship in Belarus . He made a significant contribution to this with eight scorer points in six games.
For the Finnish U20 national team , which he had also represented in the Mestis , Donskoi ran at the U20 World Junior Championships in 2011 in the United States and 2012 in Canada . The Finns were unable to win a medal in either of the championships on the North American continent. The attacker was first used for the men's national team as part of the Euro Hockey Tour 2013/14 . He played his first major tournament in the 2015 World Cup in the Czech Republic , where the team finished sixth. With eight scorer points in as many games, he was one of the team's positive appearances. At the World Cup of Hockey 2016 Donskoi was also part of the Finnish line-up, which finished the tournament in eighth and last place. He himself remained without a scorer point, although he was used in all three games of the Scandinavians.
