NHL Entry Draft
|
The 2010 NHL Entry Draft was the 48th Talent contraction of the National Hockey League and was held on 25 and 26 June 2010 for the first time in the Staples Center in the US Los Angeles in the state of California instead. 210 players were drawn in seven rounds.
The teams of the National Hockey League were able to secure the rights of all North American players born between January 1, 1990 and September 15, 1992, as well as all European players born between January 1, 1989 and September 15, 1992. Only players whose rights were not already held by an NHL team from a draft from previous years were available.
Draft order
The draft order of positions 1 to 14 was determined in April 2010 by the draft lottery. The 14 teams that failed to qualify for the playoffs took part in this weighted lottery and were seeded in the reverse order of the regular season table. The worst team of the past regular season was in first place and had a 25% chance of winning the lottery and the best of the 14 teams not qualified for the playoffs was in 14th place and had a chance of 0.5% .
The draft order of the 16 playoff participants was only determined after the Stanley Cup final. The Stanley Cup winner was placed on position 30, the final opponent on position 29. The teams that failed in the Conference Finals were sorted into positions 27 and 28. The remaining teams were set based on their standings in the regular season. The rule was that the team with the fewest points was in 15th position. The draft order applied to all rounds of the Entry Draft. Teams could acquire draft picks from other teams via transfers, but their own could also be given to other teams.
For the fourth time in five years, the bottom of the table in the previous season won the draft lottery.
