Derek Forbort (born March 4, 1992 in Duluth , Minnesota ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Calgary Flames in the National Hockey League since February 2020 . Previously, the defender spent almost seven years in the Los Angeles Kings organization .
Career
Derek Forbort played for the Duluth East High School ice hockey team in his hometown when he was young . In the 2008/09 season, the defender got 28 scorer points in 25 games in the regional high school league , so that at the end of the season he was in the USA Hockey National Team Development Program (NTDP), the central talent factory of the US Ice Hockey Association, was invited. As a result, Forbort spent the entire 2009/10 season in the squad of the NTDP and took part with the team in the game operations of the United States Hockey League (USHL), the highest junior league in the United States. At the same time, the selections of the NTDP act as junior national teams, so that he won the gold medal with the U18 of the United States at the U18 World Cup in 2010 . In the subsequent NHL Entry Draft 2010 he was selected in 15th position by the Los Angeles Kings .
As a result, Forbort enrolled at the University of North Dakota in the fall of 2010 and from then on played for their Fighting Sioux in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA), a league of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). In his first two seasons, the defender won the WCHA championship with the Fighting Sioux and took part in the U20 World Championships in 2011 and 2012 with the U20 national team in his home country , with Team USA winning the bronze medal in 2011. After his sophomore year, which he finished with 17 points out of 42 with personal bests, the Los Angeles Kings equipped him with an entry-level contract in April 2013 .
For the time being , the Kings used Forbort exclusively with their farm team , the Manchester Monarchs , in the American Hockey League (AHL), with the team winning the 2015 AHL Playoffs for the Calder Cup . At the beginning of the following season 2015/16, the American made his debut for the Kings in the National Hockey League (NHL) and came to 14 NHL appearances over the course of the year, but also spent most of this year in the AHL, with the Kings new farm team , the Ontario Reign . After signing a new two-year contract in Los Angeles in July 2016, Forbort established himself as part of the preparation for the season in the Kings NHL squad and was used there regularly from then on.
After almost seven years in the organization of the Kings, Forbort was handed over to the Calgary Flames for the trade deadline in February 2020 , which in return sent a conditional four-round vote in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft to Los Angeles.
