Tobias "Toby" Rieder (born January 10, 1993 in Landshut ) is a German ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Calgary Flames from the National Hockey League since September 2019 and plays there in the position of right winger . The attacker made his professional debut in 2009 with the Landshut Cannibals from the 2nd Bundesliga . At the 2011 NHL Entry Draft , Rieder was selected in the fourth round in 114th overall position by the Edmonton Oilers . After a swap deal with the Oilers in March 2013, Rieder was part of the Arizona Coyotes organization from 2014 to 2018 and also briefly played for the Los Angeles Kings before returning to Edmonton for a season.
Career
Tobias Rieder went through the youth department at his home club, the EV Landshut , with which he became German student champion in 2008. In the 2008/09 season he was his team's top scorer in the German Junior League and was a member of the German U18 national team. In the 2009/10 season he was one of the regular players in the Landshut Cannibals squad in the 2nd Bundesliga .
Kitchener Rangers
When Import Draft of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) in 2010, the striker was ranked fifth by the Kitchener Rangers pulled. Thereupon Rieder decided - despite a valid contract with the Landshutern - to switch to the Ontario Hockey League , one of the three leagues of the CHL, for the 2010/11 season . This was made possible by a clause in his contract.
The 2011/12 season was the German winger's second season as a player with the Kitchener Rangers in the OHL. In 60 games this season, Rieder was able to break the 40 goal mark: he scored 42 goals and also provided 43 assists. With these statistics, the right winger was the top scorer of the entire team at the end of the season. In the OHL, he finished ninth among the best scorers. However, Tobias Rieder was the player who reached the 85 points scorer in the fewest games. He developed a good teamwork especially with his teammate Michael Catenacci , with whom Rieder played in a row. In addition to the good offensive values, the German attacker was also able to convince in the defensive area: He not only played in the first power play formation , but also in the starting minority formation of the Kitchener Rangers. The achievements of Rieder were honored with three team trophies.
Arizona Coyotes
At the end of March 2013 Tobias Rieder was transferred from the Oilers to the Phoenix Coyotes in an exchange for striker Kale Kessy .
On November 2, 2014, he was appointed to the Coyotes roster for the first time, made his NHL debut and scored the game-winning goal against the Washington Capitals team. In December 2014, he scored two underpaid goals in a game against his former employer, the Edmonton Oilers, within 58 seconds - no rookie has managed it faster than that .
In his rookie season 2014/2015, Rieder scored 21 points in 71 games for the Arizona Coyotes. He also scored the third most hits of all previous Coyotes rookies with 13 goals and led all NHL rookies with three underpaid goals in the season.
Los Angeles, Edmonton and Calgary
On February 21, 2018, Rieder was handed over to the Los Angeles Kings by the Arizona Coyotes including Scott Wedgewood . In addition, the Coyotes continued to take 15% of his salary and received Darcy Kuemper in return . In Los Angeles, the German ended the 2017/18 season and then received no further contract, so in July 2018 he joined the Edmonton Oilers as a free agent , who had originally selected him in the draft. Due to a low goal with the Oilers (0 goals, 11 assists), Rieder did not receive a new contract with Edmonton in 2019. From July 1, 2019, he was without a contract and was therefore considered an unrestricted free agent . Shortly before the start of the 2019/20 season , the striker received a new annual contract with the Calgary Flames after a successful trial engagement .
International
At the IIHF Skills Challenge 2008 , Rieder was named the best young player of his year. The striker played with the German U18 team at the U18 World Championships in 2009 and 2011 in the top division and in 2010 in Division I. For the U20 national team , he was the top scorer at the 2010 and 2012 Junior World Championships Assists and top scorer of the tournament was in Division I and in 2011 and 2013 in the top division on the ice.
He made his senior debut at the 2014 World Cup and was also part of the German national team the following year . He also took part in the 2016 World Cup , but only played four games due to an injury.
He also represented the Europe team at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey , where he finished second with the team.
