The U20 World Cup was held from December 26, 2009 to January 5, 2010 in the Canadian cities of Saskatoon in the Credit Union Center (CUC) (14,705 places) and in Regina in the Brandt Center (7,000 places). The CUC was rebuilt and expanded in preparation for the tournament, so that the capacity was increased from 11,310 to 14,311 places. In addition, 1,000 temporary seats were built for the tournament.

Ten national teams took part in the tournament, playing in two groups of five teams each. The United States caused a big surprise with a 6-5 win in extra time over the last five-time successful Canadians. It was only the USA's second world title ever. The only previous tournament victory was in 2004 .
