The group A tournament was held from April 7th to 13th 2017 in Bled , Slovenia . The group B tournament had previously been awarded to the Slovenian city, but since there was no host among the six participating countries, Bled also hosted the group A tournament. The games took place in Hokejska dvorana Bled with a capacity of 1,736 . A total of 2,830 spectators attended the 15 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 188 per game.
After the fourth day of the tournament, the decision to move up to the top division and relegation to Group B of Division I was made. France secured their first promotion to the top division after four wins at the start - including victories against Germany and last year's relegated Denmark. The French had listened to Division I without interruption since the 2009 World Cup . Behind France, Kazakhstan, which was no longer able to benefit from the final 5-0 victory over France on the final day, came in second. Denmark was relegated to the last World Cup only in third place. Germany disappointed with just one victory in fifth place in the final ranking. The move back to the B group had to go to promoted Hungary, which won none of the five games, scored only six goals and even lost two games in double figures.

The group B tournament was also held in Bled , Slovenia from April 15 to 21, 2017 . The games took place in Hokejska dvorana Bled with a capacity of 1,736 . A total of 3,540 spectators attended the 15 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 236 per game. The tournament was thus slightly better attended than Group A, which was held in the same place the previous week.
With the home advantage in their backs, hosts Slovenia managed to return to Group A after four years in Group B of Division I, leaving the Austrians and Japanese who were favored before the start of the tournament behind. The Slovenes started the tournament furiously and defeated Japan 10-0 on the first day of the tournament. The Austrians were also only able to win their opening game in extra time, but then beat Slovenia the next day. Ukraine led the table after two tournament days. After Austria lost to Italy and the Ukrainians also lost points, the Slovenes took over the lead in the table by beating the later relegated Poland and did not give it up again until the final day. Last year's climber Poland, who was only able to collect two points through defeats after regular time, immediately descended back into Group A of Division II.

The Group A tournament of Division II was held from April 2 to 8, 2017 in Gangneung , South Korea . The games took place at the 10,000-seat Gangneung Hockey Center and the 6,000-seat Kwandong Hockey Center . Both stadiums will serve as competition venues for the men's and women's Olympic ice hockey tournaments at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang . They were awarded to the South Korean ice hockey association Korea Ice Hockey Association - as in the parallel tournament of Division IIA of the 2017 Women's World Cup - as part of the world title matches after the arenas were completed in 2016. A total of 11,184 spectators attended the 15 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 745 per game.
Last year's relegated South Korea could not use the home advantage and had to give way to Romania, which secured the tournament victory in a direct duel against the hosts and thus promotion to Group B of Division I. The Romanians remained undefeated in the five tournament games after regular time and were only subject to the later third-placed Lithuania on the second day of the tournament in overtime . Estonia, who only lost to Romania and finished second in the tournament, caused a surprise. Croatia had to make the way to Group B of Division II, which only got one point.

The group B tournament was held from March 13th to 19th, 2017 in the Serbian capital Belgrade . The games took place in the Ledena dvorana Pionir with a capacity of 2,000 . Initially, Novi Sad, in northern Serbia, was planned as the venue where the 1,623-seat Ledena dvorana SPENS was to be played. Due to problems with the cooling system for the ice rink, the tournament was moved to the capital at short notice. A total of 3,729 spectators attended the 15 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 248 per game.
The promotion to Group A of Division II surprisingly secured last year's promoted Australia, which prevailed in the decisive final group game against the hosts Serbia. By winning a direct duel against the Spaniards tied on points, the Australians secured the title. Four of the six teams went into the final day with nine points each and all of them still had a chance of promotion. In the duel for relegation, Iceland was able to prevail on the last day of the tournament against the Belgians, who had also had no points until then, so that they were relegated to Group A of Division III.

The Group A tournament was held from March 21 to 27, 2017 in Taipei , the capital of the Republic of China (Taiwan) . The games took place in the 800-seat Annex Ice Rink . A total of 7,382 spectators attended the 15 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 492 per game.
With a flawless record of five clear wins in as many games and a goal balance of 35: 1, last year's relegated team and tournament favorite People's Republic of China managed to return directly to Group B of Division II, to which she had previously belonged for three years in a row. The later climbers laid the foundation for the tournament victory with successes over their direct competitors Israel and the Republic of China. With only a simple point gain, promoted New Zealand had to accept the direct relegation to Group B of Division III.
The tournament was overshadowed by an incident following the prestige duel between the host nation and the People's Republic of China. After the final siren, an actor from the People's Republic checked an opposing player to the ground, whereupon there were scuffles and blows between the two teams. This caused the audience to throw objects onto the ice surface. The players of the People's Republic acknowledged this with provocative gestures and waving their national flag in the direction of the audience. A political conflict over the independence of the island of Taiwan has been smoldering between the two nations for years . As a result, two players from the People's Republic were suspended for one or two games.
