The 42nd Ice Hockey World Championships of the U20 Juniors of the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF were the ice hockey world championships of 2018 in the age group of the under-20s (U20). Between December 9, 2017 and February 6, 2018, a total of 42 national teams took part in the seven tournaments of the top division as well as divisions I to III and the qualification for the latter. With Turkmenistan, which was to take part in a world championship tournament for the first time with its U20 selection, a new record number of 43 participants was recorded, after which a qualification for Division III had been introduced for the first time since 2001 . However, Turkmenistan withdrew its participation a week before the tournament.

For the 17th time, the world champion became the team of the record world champions from Canada , who beat Sweden 3-1 in the final . The Switzerland finished in eighth place in the top division. In the A group of Division I, the German offspring took third and Austria fifth, which means that both teams once again missed promotion to the top division.

Participants, venues and periods

TurkmenistanTurkmenistan Turkmenistan withdrew its participation in the qualifying tournament for Division III a few days before the tournament began.

mode

The ice hockey world championship is played in a total of seven tournaments with different levels of participants. The top division plays with ten teams, divisions I and II with twelve each and division III with six participants. There are also three other national selections that play a qualification for Division III.

In Divisions I and II, the twelve teams are divided into two groups of six teams. Division III plays due to the new entry of Turkmenistan with six instead of eight participants. As a result, the last two participants from the previous year were relegated to the qualification.

The last placed in the relegation round descends from the top division into group A of division I. For the same reason, the first-placed rider will be promoted to the top division next year, while the sixth-placed rider will be relegated to Group B of Division I. In return, the winner of Division IB moves up to Division IA. The last one from Division IB is also relegated to Division II A. The promotion regulation of Division IB with one promoted and relegated also applies to Division II A, II B and III. The first placed in the qualification for Division III rises to the same.
