Kailer Yamamoto (born September 29, 1998 in Spokane , Washington ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Edmonton Oilers of the National Hockey League since August 2017 and at the same time for their farm team, the Bakersfield Condors , in American Hockey League is used.
Career
Kailer Yamamoto grew up in Spokane and was selected in 2013 by the local Spokane Chiefs in the Bantam Draft of the Western Hockey League (WHL) in 105th position. The attacker then spent a season with the Los Angeles Jr. Kings before returning to his homeland for the 2014/15 season and running for the Chiefs in the WHL. In addition, he was twice a brief member of the USA Hockey National Team Development Program , the central talent factory of the American Association USA Hockey , but was unable to establish himself there. In his second WHL season, however, he was the team's best scorer with 71 points and increased his personal statistics again significantly in the following year. With 42 goals and 57 assists, only five WHL players scored more points than the winger, who also belonged to the Second All-Star Team of the WHL's Western Conference. As a result, he was selected in 22nd position by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft .
The Oilers provided Yamamoto with an entry-level contract back in August 2017 before the American won a temporary place in the Edmonton squad in the following pre-season. As a result, he made his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL) in October 2017 and came in a total of nine missions on three assists before he was sent back to the Spokane Chiefs in the WHL in early November. At the beginning of the 2018/19 season, he then returned to the Oilers' NHL squad, but also made regular changes to the farm team , the Bakersfield Condors from the American Hockey League (AHL).
Despite his physique (173 cm; 70 kg), which is clearly below average for NHL standards, Yamamoto is considered a talented offensive player, who therefore impresses above all with his understanding of the game and technical qualities. In this context he has been compared to Johnny Gaudreau .
International
On an international level, Yamamoto made his home country debut at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge in November 2014 , where he won the silver medal with Team USA . This was followed by a fifth place at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2015 and a bronze medal at the U18 World Junior Championship in 2016 , before he was part of the U20 national team of the USA at the U20 World Junior Championship in his own country in 2018 . There he also won the bronze medal.
