The 2016/17 WHL season was the 51st season of the Western Hockey League . The regular season began on September 23, 2016 and ended on 19 March 2017 by winning the Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy by the Regina Pats . This was followed by the playoffs for the Ed Chynoweth Cup , which the Seattle Thunderbirds won for the first time in their history on May 14, 2017.
