The Saskatoon Blades are a professional Canadian ice hockey team from Saskatoon , Saskatchewan that plays in the junior division of the Western Hockey League .
history
The Saskatoon Blades was founded in 1964 in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League , in 1966 the team then moved to the Western Hockey League. Thus, the Blades are the only team that has still played in their original hometown since the WHL was founded, as the Regina Pats still play in Regina , but had switched back to the SJHL for a few seasons in the early years of the WHL. First the Blades played their home games in the Saskatoon Arena , in 1988 the franchise finally moved to "Saskatchewan Place", today's Credit Union Center . In the new, 11,310-seat arena, the Blades wore the Memorial Cup 1989, in which they failed only in the final at the Swift Current Broncos . In 1992 and 1994, the team twice reached the final of the Ed Chynoweth Cup , the championship of the WHL, but both final series were lost in seven games against the Kamloops Blazers . Since the Blades have never won the WHL championship, this represents the longest time without a title in the entire Canadian Hockey League .
