Wade William Belak , b. Aadland , (born July 3, 1976 in Saskatoon , Saskatchewan , † August 31, 2011 in Toronto , Ontario ) was a Canadian ice hockey player who played 571 games for the Colorado Avalanche , Calgary Flames , Toronto Maple Leafs , Florida Panthers and Nashville Predators in the National Hockey League on the position of the defender has denied his biggest career successes celebrated Belak, of the type of player the Enforcers embodied, but in the service of the Hershey Bears by winning the Calder Cup of the American Hockey League in 1997 and the British Championship with the Coventry Blaze in 2005. His brother Graham was also a professional ice hockey player.

Career

Wade Belak first played from 1991 to 1993 for the North Battleford North Stars in lower class junior leagues in Saskatchewan . The 1992/93 season ended the Enforcer in his hometown with the Saskatoon Blades , for which he played regularly in the Western Hockey League until 1996 . During this time he was selected during the NHL Entry Draft 1994 by the Québec Nordiques in the first round as the twelfth player and made his debut in professional ice hockey in the American Hockey League for the Cornwall Aces .

In the years 1996 to 1999 Belak stood for the successor team of the Nordiques, the Colorado Avalanche in the National Hockey League on the ice, but he was mainly used in their farm team , with the Hershey Bears in the AHL.

In February 1999, the defender was initially transferred to the Calgary Flames . Due to a shoulder injury, he was out for a long time, so that he was put on the waiver list in February 2001 and signed by the Toronto Maple Leafs . Belak played in Toronto for seven years, only the time of lockout in the NHL season 2004/05 bridged the Canadian in the British Elite Ice Hockey League with the Coventry Blaze and won the British championship with the team . On February 26, 2008, the Florida Panthers acquired Belak from the Maple Leafs in exchange for their five-round voting rights in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft , but after only six months he was acquired on November 27, 2008 by the Nashville Predators in a transfer deal. In return, Nick Tarnasky switched to the Panthers.

In March 2011, the defender announced the end of his career. On August 31, 2011, Belak was found dead in the Condotel One King Street West in Toronto . The cause of death is considered to be suicide by hanging .
