The 1999/2000 NHL season was the 83rd season in the National Hockey League . 28 teams played 82 games each. The Stanley Cup won the New Jersey Devils after a 4-2 win in the final series against the Dallas Stars . With the Stars, a reigning Stanley Cup winner lost the final for the first time since the New York Islanders in 1984.

The NHL introduced a new mode for scoring. A team also got a point for losing after overtime, as well as for a draw.

After an NHL team was based in Atlanta from 1972 to 1980, the Atlanta Thrashers, a successor franchise in the US state of Georgia, started playing almost two decades after the Flames had moved to Calgary.

Entry Draft

The 37th NHL Entry Draft took place on June 26, 1999 at the Fleet Center in Boston , Massachusetts , United States .

Intensive barter deals preceded the draft. The Vancouver Canucks were determined to sign the Swedish twin brothers Daniel and Henrik Sedin . They managed to get second and third in the draft and the Atlanta Thrashers chose the Czech Patrik Štefan with the first pick. The first 10 draft picks were split between only six teams. For the first time in the history of the draft, there was no Canadian in the top five picks.

Best scorer

Although Jaromír Jágr had missed 19 games, it was enough for the title of top scorer. With 58 goals Pawel Bure was the most successful goalscorer, with 360 shots he tried it the most often. For these performances he needed 74 games and was hot on Jágr's heels. With the season's best performance of 63 assists, Mark Recchi finished third among the top scorers. Outnumbered Owen Nolan was the best with 18 goals, while outnumbered John Madden was successful with six goals. With an average of 22.9 percent, more than every fifth shot by Mike Eastwood landed in the gate. The Plus / Minus led Chris Pronger with +52. The bad guy of the season was Denny Lambert with 219 penalty minutes. Nicklas Lidström had the best statistics among the defenders with 20 goals, 53 assists and 73 points.
