During the lockout and the associated failure of the 2004/05 NHL season , the Canadian moved to Finland in the SM-liiga at Helsingfors IFK , but only completed three games. Before the 2005/06 season , team captain Scott Stevens resigned, which is why the management of the New Jersey Devils decided not to give the "C" to any player for the time being and instead to only play with alternative captains, including Madden. On April 25, 2006, he managed his first hat trick in the playoffs against the New York Rangers . He scored two of the goals outnumbered . It wasn't until January 2012 that Madden agreed on a contractual relationship with the Florida Panthers . At the end of the 2011/12 season, he finally ended his playing career. John Madden was one of the best defensive strikers in the NHL and was considered a specialist in outnumbered situations.
Following his active career, Madden took over the position of assistant coach with the Florida Panthers in November 2013 , after having worked as a scout for the Canadiens de Montréal the year before .
