Dirk Milton Graham (born July 29, 1959 in Regina , Saskatchewan ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current coach and scout , who played 862 games for the Minnesota North Stars and Chicago Blackhawks in the course of his active career between 1975 and 1995 of the National Hockey League on the position of the right winger . Graham celebrated his greatest career success, who also briefly coached the Chicago Blackhawks in the 1998/99 season as head coach, wearing the jersey of the Canadian national team with the victory at the Canada Cup 1991 . Since summer 2008 he has been working as a scout for the San Jose Sharks in the NHL and has also worked on the farm team's coaching staff since 2014 .

Graham was when he was named captain of the Chicago Blackhawks in 1989, the only African-born player in NHL history to be entrusted with this post. He was also when he was appointed head coach of the Blackhawks for the 1998/99 season, the first African-born head coach in the NHL.

Career

Graham spent his junior time in his hometown of Regina in the province of Saskatchewan . There he played for the Regina Pats in the Western Canada Hockey League . After four good years in Regina who chose him Vancouver Canucks in the 1979 NHL Entry Draft in the fifth round than 89 out. He stayed in the minor leagues and played there for the Dallas Black Hawks in the Central Hockey League and the Fort Wayne Komets and the Toledo Goaldiggers in the International Hockey League . In 1983, after the Canucks' rights had expired, the Minnesota North Stars hired him as a free agent .

In the 1983/84 season he played again in the CHL, now with the Salt Lake Golden Eagles . But in this season he came to his first NHL appearances in Minnesota. In the coming season he initially played in the American Hockey League with the Springfield Indians , but was finally able to prevail in the NHL. His qualities as a scorer were decent, but he was outstanding as a checker and leader.

During the 1987/88 season , the Northstars gave Graham to the Chicago Blackhawks . From 1989 he was captain of the Blackhawks and led his team in 1992 in the finals of the Stanley Cup . After the 1994/95 season he ended, who was regularly used both outnumbered and outnumbered, his career and was assistant coach of Craig Hartsburg with the Blackhawks.

In the 1998/99 season he took over the team from Chicago as head coach, but was replaced by Lorne Molleken during the season . After a break of several years, he was temporarily active in the 2003/04 season as a scout with the Tampa Bay Lightning , which won the Stanley Cup that season . In the summer of 2004 he took over the coaching position with the Springfield Falcons in the American Hockey League for two years . He then worked as a scout for Tampa again for two years before moving to the San Jose Sharks , where he has since worked in scouting and talent development as a trainer.
