Marvin Palmer Morris "Cy, Cyclone" Wentworth (born January 24, 1905 in Grimsby , Ontario , † October 10, 1982 in Toronto , Ontario) was a Canadian ice hockey player who in the course of his active career between 1926 and 1940, among other things, 610 games for played the Chicago Black Hawks , Montreal Maroons and Canadiens de Montréal in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . Wentworth, who was once called to the NHL Second All-Star Team , celebrated his greatest career success with the Montreal Maroons, which he led to winning the Stanley Cup in 1935 .

Career

Wentworth spent his junior years in his home province of Ontario , where he played between 1922 and 1925 in the junior system of the Ontario Hockey Association . Among other things, the defender ran for the Grimsby Lions , Hamilton Junior Tigers and Brantford Lions before moving to the Windsor Hornets as a 20-year-old .

After 20 senior appearances with the Hornets in the 1925/26 season, Wentworth was signed for the 1926/27 season by the Chicago Cardinals from the American Hockey Association , who paid a transfer to Windsor in December 1926 to sign the player . In Chicago, the defender so impressed that he was hired for the following season by the Chicago Black Hawks from the National Hockey League . With the Black Hawks, the Canadian developed into a solid defensive player who, despite his relatively small height and weight, had a good body check . He stayed a total of five seasons in the "Windy City" , mostly played on the defensive with Taffy Abel and served as the fourth team captain in franchise history in the 1931/32 season . At this time the defender began to discover his offensive game and with 13 points scored more than ever before.

Before the start of the 1932/33 game year , Wentworth's time in Chicago ended abruptly when he was sold to league rivals Montreal Maroons in late October 1932 for $ 10,000 . In the Maroons Wentworth continued the positive development of his game and was able to increase his point yield in his debut season by one point. Over the years, the defender has developed into a leading player on the defensive, which ultimately played a key role in ensuring that Montreal at the end of the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1935 for the first time in nine years the Stanley Cup won. Wentworth and his teammate Baldy Northcott finished the playoffs as top scorer. In addition, Wentworth was appointed to the NHL Second All-Star Team .

With the cessation of game operations at the Maroons due to financial problems before the start of the 1938/39 season , the defensive player - like numerous other players - was sold to city rivals Canadiens de Montréal . There Wentworth let his career fade out in the following two seasons, before he retired from active sport in the summer of 1940 at the age of 35. In the course of his career Wentworth came to a total of 610 NHL missions, in which he scored 118 times. In addition to a Stanley Cup victory and the election to the Second All-Star Team of the league, he also took part in the two previous games of the NHL All-Star Games - the Howie Morenz Memorial Game in 1937 and the Babe Siebert Memorial Game two years later - part.

As a result, Marvin Wentworth settled in Toronto in his home province and pursued numerous business ideas there. He died there in October 1982 at the age of 77.
