Altena is a municipality in the Dutch province of Noord-Brabant . It emerged on January 1, 2019 from the merger of the municipalities of Aalburg , Werkendam and Woudrichem .

geography

The municipality of Altena is located in the north of Noord-Brabant on the border with the provinces of Zuid-Holland and Gelderland . The municipal area includes the western and northern parts of the De Biesbosch National Park , the rest of the area is administered by the municipality of Drimmelen . To the east, Altena is separated from Gelderland by the Afgedamde Maas and Heusdensch Kanaal rivers . The remaining municipal boundaries are just as natural: the area of ​​Altena is limited in the north by the Boven-Merwede , in the west by the Nieuwe Merwede and in the south by the Amer and Bergsche Maas .

In Altena, a coalition of Altena Lokaal , the CDA, Progressief Altena and the SGP is in power during the legislative period from 2019 to 2022 . The CDA is present with two councilors in the College van burgemeester en wethouders ( German  college of mayors of councilors ), while the other council factions each provide one councilor. The college was appointed at a council meeting on January 22, 2019. The following people belong to the college and manage the following departments:

mayor

The office of mayor was temporarily held in a temporary capacity by Marcel Fränzel , a member of the D66 . Fränzel has been acting mayor in several municipalities in recent years. He was most recently mayor of the municipality of Oosterhout , after having been mayor of the merged municipality of Meierijstad (2017) as well as of Veghel (2016) and Noord-Beveland (2015). The official appointment of the new mayor, Egbert Lichtenberg (CDA), took place on December 9, 2019.

Seat of the municipality

The town hall in Wijk en Aalburg , the former seat of the municipality of Aalburg , will temporarily serve as accommodation for the municipality of Altena. As the building has already been sold to the Dutch Reformed parish of Wijk as a result of the merger , it must be rented back by the Altena parish. The municipal administration will then be housed in a building in Almkerk that will also be used as a branch of the Rabobank .

Surname

The citizens of the three municipalities were able to decide on the name of the merged municipality in 2016. To date, 808 proposals had been submitted, seven of which were shortlisted. These included the following names: Almerwaard, Altena, Altena (en) Biesbosch, Biesbosch, Biesbosch (en) Altena, Maas (en) Merwe and Maas en Merweland. The commission, which consisted of members of foundations and associations, again narrowed down the choice of names. Finally there were four names that could be chosen by the citizens.

In the Middle Ages, the glory of Altena land around the Altena fort in Almkerk (from 1230) was owned by the von Horn family .
