Due to the merger on January 1, 2019, the citizens of the municipalities of Aalburg, Werkendam and Woudrichem elected the council of the new municipality of Altena on November 21, 2018.

The municipality was created in 1973 after the merger of the municipalities of Wijk en Aalburg, Veen and Eethen.
