history
Geldrop is known for the first time around 1600. When in 1629 the general Friedrich Heinrich von Oranien-Nassau took the city of Herzogenbusch for the Protestant Republic of the United Netherlands , many Catholics had to flee. The bishop Ophovius, an acquaintance of the Antwerp diplomat and painter Peter Paul Rubens , moved to Geldrop Castle. Rubens is said to have visited him there and perhaps painted; a portrait of the bishop by Rubens hangs in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam .
In the 19th century Geldrop temporarily became a factory town thanks to the wool and textile industry , which however died out after around 1960. During the Second World War there was heavy fighting here as part of Operation Market Garden (September / October 1944).
