The Eindhoven - Weert railway is an approximately 30 km long railway line between Eindhoven and Weert in the Netherlands . The double-track, electrified line was opened in 1913 and runs in the provinces of North Brabant and Limburg .

The route begins at Eindhoven Centraal station and leaves it to the southeast. The first stop was in the Tongelre district of Eindhoven . After Geldrop , the route turns more towards the south and remains relatively straight in the further course. The major part is laid out in the embankment . Weerter train station is reached from the west, where the line joins the Rheydt - Antwerp (IJzeren Rijn) line. Between Maarheeze and Weert , the route crosses the border between North Brabant and Limburg.

history

The railway line was built from 1910 and opened on October 30, 1913. Scheduled operations began on November 1, 1913. The train stations in Eindhoven and Weert received new station buildings at this time . The construction was carried out to shorten the Staatslijn E ( Breda  –Eindhoven - Venlo  - Maastricht ), especially since this was still single-track in the affected section. Through trains gradually used the new connection, with the increase in coal transports, Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van Staatsspoorwegen also increasingly shifted freight trains onto the route.

In the 1930s the Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) closed all intermediate stops except for the Heeze train station. Geldrop station went back into operation after two years. During the Second World War the four bridges over the Zuid-Willemsvaart were blown up, after the war two shelters were rebuilt. Since then, the separation point from the route with the IJzeren Rijn has been located west of the canal. In 1949 the NS electrified the line with direct current. In 1960 the Heeze-Leende station was named Heeze . In 1977 it was moved 1.3 kilometers north, closer to the city center. The old station remained as a service station . In 2010 the Maarheeze stop was reopened in a different location.

traffic

In the beginning, some express trains ran between the Randstad and Maastricht over the route, they were supplemented by passenger trains that stopped at all intermediate stations. After the Second World War, the NS gradually expanded the offer so that almost all express trains in the direction of Limburg use the connection. In the 1950s, a pair of express trains ran every two hours on the routes Amsterdam  - Maastricht and Rotterdam  / The Hague  - Utrecht  - Maastricht / Heerlen , stopping at all subway stations along the route. With the 1970 annual timetable, the offer was expanded to  include an hourly IC train pair Zandvoort – Maastricht and Zandvoort – Heerlen. There are also hourly sprinters between Eindhoven and Weert.
