List of train stations in the Netherlands |
The train station Utrecht Centraal , commonly known Utrecht CS is the main station of the Dutch city of Utrecht . It is the largest train station in the Netherlands with 16 tracks on 8 platforms, as well as the busiest train station in the Netherlands with around 1,500 trains and 194,385 (2018) passengers per day. Utrecht CS is connected to Germany every two hours via ICE International . There are direct trains to Oberhausen , Düsseldorf , Cologne and Frankfurt am Main . The station is an important hub in the heart of the Netherlands. Almost every major city in the Netherlands has a train connection with Utrecht. The station is on the Centraalspoorweg (Utrecht – Kampen), Rhijnspoorweg (Amsterdam – Arnhem), Staatslijn H (Utrecht – Boxtel) and Goudselijn (Utrecht – Rotterdam) lines.
history
The first station in what is now the station's area was opened in 1843 when the Nederlandsche Rhijnspoorweg-Maatschappij opened their very first station in Utrecht. In 1938 the original regional train station was converted into a main train station. At that time, the then Maliebaan station east of the city center closed and the line from Hilversum was directed to the main station.
Until 1973 the city kept the old station building from 1865 after it was completely renovated in 1936. This station building was demolished in the 1970s and partly replaced by the “Hoog Catharijne” shopping center . Since then, the station concourse has not had its own entrance, but the aisles of the shopping center lead directly into the station concourse. In 1989 the station was expanded by a platform.
The station has been completely rebuilt since 2008 and large parts of its surroundings by 2020. The hall was replaced by a glass construction by the Benthem Crouwel architects , and platform roofs are also being renewed. The bus station, which was previously on the east side of the train station, has been divided into two stops.
The station, which was converted for 420 million euros, opened on December 7, 2016. The area of the platform hall was increased from 8,000 to 25,000 m² and a bicycle station for 12,500 people was built. The number of points was reduced from 186 to 60, the permissible speed increased from 40 to up to 80 km / h. In the future, 150 trains per hour (previously 100 trains) should be able to be dispatched.
A model of the new train station can be seen in the Madurodam miniature park .
