The Weesp station is a separation station of the Dutch railway company NS in the northeastern Dutch city of Weesp . It is an important interchange point southwest of Amsterdam .
history
The first station was built in 1872 with the Amsterdam – Amersfoort section of the Amsterdam – Zutphen railway line, which was under construction. In 1918 one of the worst railway accidents in the Netherlands occurred west of the station , in which 41 people died.
The first station building was demolished in 1967 and replaced by a new building that was used until 1985. Parts of it are still used today to park bicycles . From 1985 the station was expanded further. Until then he had two tracks. With the planned opening of the railway line to Lelystad , however, three lines were to run through the station, which made it necessary to expand to four tracks. In 1987, when the Weesp – Lelystad railway line was opened, the new facility with four tracks on two central platforms was completed.
Since Weesp is mainly used by commuters and transfer passengers, the tracks are arranged in the direction of operation. In 2003, Gooiboog , an overpass structure, was built to enable trains from Utrecht to travel directly to Lelystad . Until then, commuters from the direction of Utrecht to Flevoland always had to change in Weesp.
