Lelystad ( listen ? / I ) is the capital of the Dutch province of Flevoland , not far from Amsterdam . Lelystad has 77,932 inhabitants (as of January 31, 2019). Audio file / audio sample

The municipal area includes both part of the IJsselmeer and most of the Markermeer . From the mainland ( Polder Flevoland) the central dike ( Dutch: Houtribdijk or Markerwaarddijk ), which separates the IJsselmeer from the Markermeer, leads to Enkhuizen . The dike also falls within the municipality of Lelystad.

history

Lelystad was founded in 1967. It was named after Cornelis Lely , the initiator of the Zuiderzeewerke . The originally planned name was Flevostad .

Like all of Flevoland (except for the former islands of Urk and Schokland ), Lelystad was built on a polder , that is, land reclaimed from the sea. The area did not dry out until 1957. Today Lelystad is almost five meters below sea level.

The oldest part of the place is Lelystad-Haven, which comprised the area of the pioneer island with the workers' settlement from which the dam was built and which has therefore existed since the construction of the polder.

Originally Lelystad was planned as the regional center for the entire southern polder, but its isolated location made this function difficult from the start. Originally the city was supposed to be in the center of the area consisting of Markerwaard, Südflevoland, Ostflevoland and Noordoostpolder. When the southern part of the Flevoland polder fell dry and Almere emerged as a relief site for the Randstad , Almere benefited from the proximity to the Randstad; Almere grew faster than Randstad.

When the Markerwaard (originally planned polder in the Markermeer ) was not built and the connection from the west via the Marken region was not established, the isolated location of Lelystad remained permanently.

coat of arms

A golden crown rests on the golden heraldic shield , interspersed with a black honeycomb pattern , in which a blue shield with a silver lily is embedded in the center . It is held by two golden, red-armored and tongued lions , decorated with a red tail crest and an equally colored fins and silver fish-tailed lions .

Attractions

Lelystad harbor

The important nature reserve Oostvaardersplassen is in the immediate vicinity . The Batavia Stad Fashion Outlet shopping center is located northwest of the city . Right next to it there is a polder museum (Nieuwland Erfgoedcentrum) and a museum in which historical ships are built and restored using historical methods ( Bataviawerf ). The Aviodrome aviation museum with the world's last airworthy Douglas DC-2 is located at Lelystad Airport . The sculpture and landmark “De Hurkende Man” can also be seen from the harbor. The 25 meter high steel sculpture was created by the artist Antony Gormley in 2010 and has a total weight of 44,000 kg.

Until 2016, Lelystad was the seat of the Nederlands Instituut voor Scheeps- en onderwater Archeologie (NISA) (Dutch Institute for Ship and Underwater Archeology) with a 140 m long building, which belongs to the Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed (RCE) (Reich Service for the Cultural Heritage) is affiliated. Among other things, the ship finds from Zwammerdam were preserved here. In the meantime, the institute has been transferred to the Stichting Erfgoed Batavialand (“Erbgutstiftung Batavialand”), which is also based in Amersfoort.

mayor

Since the establishment of the municipality of Lelystad on January 1st, 1980, the following persons have held the office of mayor:

traffic

The city is connected to the Dutch motorway network by the Dutch A 6 motorway from Amsterdam via Almere and Lelystad to Emmeloord . An A72 was planned for east-west traffic, but this project was never implemented. A piece of nature is still named after it: Het Zand A72. It is also connected to the road network through the Provinciale route 302 ( Enkhuizen - ( Markermeer ) –Lelystad– Harderwijk ) and the Provinciale route N 307 and N 309 via Dronten and Kampen to Zwolle .

There is a rail link in the direction of Almere – Amsterdam and Almere – Utrecht. From 2007 to 2012 the Lelystad – Kampen – Zwolle connection was built. Since the Hanzelijn went into operation on December 9, 2012, Lelystad Centrum is no longer Flevolijn's terminus . There were plans for a new express connection from Amsterdam to the north of the Netherlands. It would connect Lelystad to Friesland and Groningen via Emmeloord . However, this plan was rejected by the government in 2006.

In addition to the city bus and the regional bus routes connecting the town, there is a fast bus connection to Emmeloord – Joure – Groningen (Interliner).

Until 2019, Lelystad Airport, a few kilometers south of the city, was only equipped for private planes. The airport has been redesigned as a charter airport and will in future serve to relieve the Amsterdam Schiphol international airport . However, the opening planned for April 2020 has been delayed due to problems with emissions quotas.

For a short time there was a ferry connection between Lelystad and Amsterdam.

The concept of separate traffic routes deserves special mention; the extensive network of cycle and footpaths in Lelystad is largely separated from the roads for motorized traffic. Only immediately in the traffic-calmed areas, e.g. B. the residential areas, the separate traffic routes are merged.
