The Markermeer (Dutch sea - the lake) is a 700 km², up to four meters deep lake in the Netherlands . It was created in 1976 when the Markerwaarddijk was built from Enkhuizen to Lelystad . This separates the Markermeer in the northeast from the IJsselmeer and the main road N302 runs over it . In the southeast the water is bordered by the southern and eastern Flevoland , an artificial polder . Originally, the Markermeer was supposed to be drained as a Markerwaardpolder as part of the Zuiderzeewerke such as South and East Flevoland or the Noordoostpolder , but the region has now established itself as a leisure area, so that the implementation of this plan is rather unlikely.

In 2012 a plan was presented by the “ Vereniging Natuurmonumenten ” which provides for the construction of five artificial islands near the Markerwarddijk. In 2016, the islands began to be washed up; on September 24, 2016, the first island with a size of 250 ha was completed. The purpose of the facility is to maintain the natural bird and fish population.

Other waters that emerged from the former Zuiderzee are the IJsselmeer and the IJmeer (inland IJ), which belongs to the Markermeer , as well as the bay near Amsterdam , which is also called Buiten-IJ and which is separated from the inland IJ by the Oranjeschleusen.

A popular destination is the eponymous island of Marken , which is connected to the mainland by a road. To the west of it is a bay called Gouwzee , which is largely separated from the open Markermeer by the island of Marken and its dykes.

The area is also known for its cheese production. Not far from the Gouwzee is Edam , eponymous for the Edam cheese with red rind.

Other prominent towns on the Markermeer are Volendam (to Edam-Volendam), Hoorn , Enkhuizen , Lelystad and Almere . To the south of this is the Oostvaardersplassen nature reserve on Flevoland .
