Arnulf Schlueter (born August 24, 1922 in Berlin , † June 24, 2011 in Munich ) was a German astrophysicist . He is considered to be one of the pioneers of cosmic electrodynamics and plasma physics .

Arnulf Schlüter was in 1947 at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Bonn with the work "The statistical balance between states of different energy: Boltzmann distribution and Thermodynamics" to Dr. rer. nat. PhD and initially worked at the Max Planck Institute for Physics and Astrophysics in Göttingen. In 1958 he followed the Institute to Munich, where he became full professor of theoretical physics at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich appointed was.

In 1959 he became a Scientific Member of the Max Planck Society . He was involved in founding the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Garching , which he headed from 1965 to 1973 as Scientific Director. He headed the research area "Stellarator Theory", which dealt with the calculation of fusion experiments of the " Stellarator ". He was instrumental in setting up the first nuclear fusion experiments in Germany. In 1990 he retired .

From 1986 to 1992 he was President of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . He was a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina , Halle (since 1975), and a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences . In 1999 he was awarded the Bavarian Maximilian Order for Science and Art .
