Nicola Legrottaglie (born October 20, 1976 in Gioia del Colle ( BA )) is a former Italian football player and current coach .

Career

In the club

Nicola Legrottaglie began his football career in the youth teams of AS Bari . His first professional station was the AC Pistoiese in the 1996/97 season, after which he played for a year at AC Prato .

From 1998 to 2003 Legrottaglie was under contract with AC Chievo Verona , from which he was loaned to AC Reggiana in 2000 and to FC Modena in the 2000/01 season . At Chievo, he developed into a strong central defender and attracted the interest of the big clubs.

Legrottaglie 2008 in the Juventus jersey

In the summer of 2003 Nicola Legrottaglie moved to Juventus Turin, where he was initially a regular. Due to declining performance, he only got a few missions under Fabio Capello . At the end of 2004 he was awarded the Bidone d'oro . Finally he was loaned to FC Bologna in January 2005 until the end of the season and to AC Siena for the 2005/06 season.

For the 2006-07 season he returned to Juventus after the relegation to the Serie B , many experienced defenders such as Lilian Thuram , Fabio Cannavaro and Gianluca Zambrotta had lost. After he was initially ignored by coach Didier Deschamps , he was used more often in the second half of the season, played a total of twelve games and managed to get promoted back to Serie A with the team.

In the 2007/08 season Nicola Legrottaglie experienced his second spring. Almost sold before the season and only remained in the squad as a supplementary player, he benefited from the injuries of his defender colleagues Jean-Alain Boumsong and Jorge Andrade . Legrottaglie was a regular player in central defense and showed a tackle and nerve strength as in his best times. For this reason, his contract with Juventus, which expired at the end of the season, was extended to summer 2010 in November 2007. With his performances, the southern Italian also recommended himself again for the national team.

At the end of January 2011, Legrottaglie moved to AC Milan on a free transfer shortly before the end of the transfer deadline . After only one game in the second half of the 2010/11 season , his contract was not extended there.

For the 2011/12 season Legrottaglie moved to Catania Calcio , where he ended his career in 2014.

In the national team

Nicola Legrottaglie completed 16 games for the Italian national team and scored one goal. He made his debut on November 20, 2002 under Giovanni Trapattoni in a 1-1 draw against Turkey . Between 2004 and 2008 he was not nominated for the Squadra Azzurra . In August 2008, after a good season at Juventus, Legrottaglie was called up by Marcello Lippi for the first time again in the squad of the Italian national team and used in the 2-2 win against Austria . He played his last game for Italy in November 2009 in a 1-0 win over Sweden .
