Career

In the club

Beginnings in Naples

Cannavaro began playing football with a team from Bagnoli , a neighborhood in his hometown of Naples . There his talent was quickly discovered by scouts of the SSC Napoli and he moved from there to the youth of the SSC. During his youth he was also active as a ball boy in the Stadio San Paolo and was able to witness the glory days of Diego Maradona , Careca and Ciro Ferrara . In the 1992/93 season he was included in the club's professional squad and made his Serie A debut on March 7, 1993 in a 3: 4 defeat by Juventus Turin . In the next season he became a regular player and was with Napoli sixth in Serie A so he took with Napoli in the next season in the UEFA Cup in part. In the UEFA Cup, Naples failed in the third round to Eintracht Frankfurt and narrowly missed a return in the league next year. Thus the association lacked the financial means and several service providers had to be given up because the contracts could not be extended, including Cannavaro.

Transfer to AC Parma

At AC Parma , Fabio Cannavaro was part of the starting line-up in his first season . Under coach Nevio Scala , he was used 29 times in the championship and reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup , which were lost to Paris Saint-Germain . For the new season Parma signed Carlo Ancelotti as coach and this led Parma to the runner-up. Therefore, Parma took part in the Champions League in the following season , but was eliminated in the group stage in second behind Borussia Dortmund . But the next season, Cannavaro won his first title with Parma. Parma was able to win the Coppa Italia with two draws against Fiorentina , with the help of the away goals rule . Parma was also very successful internationally. The club won the UEFA Cup for the first time this season with a 3-0 win over Olympique Marseille in the final . The club played successful football in the next few years and was able to win the Coppa Italia again in Cannavaros last season.

In Parma, Cannavaro achieved the status of one of the best defenders in Italy and, together with Gianluigi Buffon and Lilian Thuram, formed an excellent defense that achieved international renown. During his time at Parma, Cannavaro was nominated by Cesare Maldini for the first time for the Squadra Azzurra and quickly developed into a regular player there. Overall, Cannavaro had drawn attention to himself with his good performances and was therefore signed by Inter Milan in the summer of 2002 for 11.5 million euros.

Two years at Inter Milan

Although Lazio Rome's president Sergio Cragnotti had already announced in the summer of 2000 that Cannavaro had pre-emptive rights, the latter did not move to Lazio because the club was heavily in debt and had to take austerity measures. Instead, he moved to Inter Milan and thus rejected further offers from other clubs that were officially interested. Inter, who had finished third the previous season , played in the Champions League this season and reached the semi-finals there with Cannavaro and his former team-mate Hernán Crespo . There Inter failed because of the away goals rule against city rivals and eventual winners, AC Milan . But Inter ended up in the league before Milan and was runner-up behind Juventus Turin , which meant a new qualification for the Champions League. In the next season, however, Inter fell short of their own claims, dropped out in the Champions League group stage and only finished fourth in Serie A. Although Cannavaro had signed a four-year contract with Inter, he left the club after this season and moved to Juventus Turin.

Juventus Turin and the football scandal

In Turin, Cannavaro met his former teammates from Parma, Gianluigi Buffon and Lilian Thuram . Again, the three played together brilliantly and twice in a row won the Scudetto with Juventus . But things didn't go so well for Juve in the Champions League , as the team were eliminated in both years in the quarter-finals. But the successful years came to an abrupt end in Turin. In May 2006, was fixing scandal uncovered and Juventus were stripped of two league titles and the club had to relegation to the Serie B suffered. Therefore, Cannavaro left the club with coach Fabio Capello and moved to Real Madrid , who were interested in him as early as 2004.

real Madrid

Cannavaro, who in 2006 despite the manipulation scandal to the European Footballer of the Year and FIFA World Player of the Year was chosen, was with the Royal directly Defense director and was a crowd favorite. Together with Fabio Capello, he was able to win the Spanish championship with Real Madrid in his first season. The team was also able to successfully defend the title in the next season. The international success did not materialize, however: In all three seasons that Cannavaro spent at Real, the team was eliminated in the round of 16 of the Champions League. After the 2008/09 season, Cannavaro's contract with Real Madrid ran out and he moved back to his old club Juventus Turin , which was promoted straight back to Serie A in 2006/07 .

Return to Juventus Turin

The Juve season under Ciro Ferrara started promisingly, but in the end it was only enough for the UEFA Europa League and not the Champions League, in which the club was eliminated in the group stage this season . In August 2009, Cannavaro tested positive for cortisone in a doping control , but escaped sanction. Instead, two Juve doctors were banned for two months because they were responsible for the late approval. Since Cannavaro's contract with the old lady was not renewed, he moved to the United Arab Emirates after a year .

From Italy to the desert

At Al-Ahli Dubai , Cannavaro received a three-year contract with a salary of one million euros a year. On June 19, 2011, the defender at Al-Ahli was terminated prematurely due to poor performance.

End of career

On July 9, 2011, the fifth anniversary of the 2006 World Cup final, Cannavaro ended his active career. He resigned on the advice of his doctors and wants to fulfill his contract in the Emirates as a consultant.

In the national team

Fabio Cannavaro's first missions were for the U-21 national team in the mid-1990s under Cesare Maldini . There he played in central defense together with Alessandro Nesta and formed a promising duo that won the U-21 European Championship in 1994 and 1996 . Since then he has represented Italy at four world championships ( 1998 in France , 2002 in Japan and South Korea , 2006 in Germany and 2010 in South Africa ). He was also active in two European championships ( 2000 in Belgium and the Netherlands and 2004 in Portugal ) for Italy.

He made his international debut for the senior team on January 22, 1997 in a 2-0 win against Northern Ireland . The final of the 2006 World Cup in Berlin , in which the Italians became world champions for the fourth time, was his 100th game for the Squadra Azzurra . As the captain of his team , he received the FIFA World Cup after beating France in the final . He also received the Silver Ball as the second most valuable player in the World Cup and was one of seven Italian players nominated by FIFA to join the World Cup's All-Star Team .

Fabio Cannavaro was also the captain of coach Donadoni's squad for the 2008 European Championship in Austria and Switzerland . On June 2, 2008 he tore a ligament on his left ankle during training in a collision with Giorgio Chiellini and had to forego participating in the European Championship due to an injury.

On June 21, 2009 he completed his 126th international match at the Confederations Cup in the preliminary round against Brazil (0: 3) and set the international record for Italy by Paolo Maldini . On August 12, 2009 he became Italy's sole record holder with the 127th international match. During the World Cup, he increased the number of his international matches to 136, but was eliminated with Italy in the preliminary round. On September 10, 2013, Gianluigi Buffon set Cannavaro's record in a 2-1 win against the Czech Republic with his 136th international match.

After the 2010 World Cup in South Africa , Fabio Cannavaro ended his national team career. Cannavaro was captain of the national team in 79 games and is therefore also the record captain.

controversy

In spring 2005, the Italian state television showed RAI , the drip-documentary of Moscow. This video is said to have been made in 1999 before the UEFA Cup final, in which Cannavaro and his then club AC Parma met Olympique Marseille . It is an amateur video that Fabio Cannavaro himself filmed with a camera. It shows him how he has a supervisor, lying on a drip, inject a drug into his arm, which is tied with a rubber hose. It is said to be Neoton, a medicine for heart patients with the active ingredient creatine . This drug was not on the doping list ; However, nothing is known about a heart disease in Cannavaro. Although Cannavaro claimed it was normal and calm, he tried to prevent it from being broadcast on television. “Strong powers” wanted to block the show, a responsible editor at the television station later complained. How the video got to the public and why Cannavaro produced it in the first place is not known.
