Roberto Donadoni (born September 9, 1963 in Cisano Bergamasco ) is a former Italian football player and current coach . From 2006 to 2008 he was the head coach of the Italian national team.

Career as a player

society

The attacking midfielder (right side) Donadoni began his professional career in 1981 in the youth of Atalanta Bergamo . In 1982 he made it to the professional team, which was playing in the Italian Serie B at the time , and made 18 appearances. Donadoni stayed in Bergamo for the time being despite several offers and a year later managed to move up to Serie A with the team .

In 1986 Roberto Donadoni moved to AC Milan , where he initially stayed until 1996. Donadoni was the AC's first purchase under Silvio Berlusconi , who took over the club in the same year. At the end of the 1980s, he was one of the pillars alongside Franco Baresi and the Dutch triangle Ruud Gullit , Frank Rijkaard and Marco van Basten , who made AC Milan the most successful club in Europe at the time. With Milan he won six Italian titles (1988, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1996, 1999), three times the European Cup and the UEFA Champions League (1989, 1990, 1994), three times the European Supercup (1989, 1990, 1994) ) and twice the World Cup (1989, 1990).

In 1996 Donadoni wanted to end his career in the USA with the New York MetroStars , but returned in October 1997 for a year and a half to AC Milan, which was then in a sporting crisis (24 appearances). Donadoni finally ended his active career in 2000 in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ittihad , where he won the last championship of his career.

National team

As an Italian international , Roberto Donadoni took part in the 1990 World Cup and the 1994 World Cup. At the 1990 World Cup, he finished third with Italy, but was one of the unlucky ones in the penalty shoot-out in the semi-final against Argentina when he missed the first penalty. He also played for Italy at the 1988 European Football Championship in Germany and the 1996 European Football Championship in England . Overall, he scored five goals in 63 games for the Italian national soccer team .

Career as a coach

Donadoni worked as a coach for AC Lecco in Serie C 2001/02, AS Livorno , Serie B in the 2002/03 season and CFC Genoa 2003/04. From January 2005 he was coach of the Italian first division club AS Livorno and resigned on February 7, 2006.

After national coach Marcello Lippi resigned after winning the 2006 World Cup , Donadoni was appointed as his successor. Donadoni lost his first game as coach of the Italian national team on August 16, 2006 against Croatia in Livorno with 0-2. Only substitute goalkeeper Marco Amelia was nominated from the World Cup squad for this friendly match . With a draw against Lithuania and a 3-1 defeat against France , he made a false start that almost every new Italian national coach had to experience. After that, however, the results improved. On November 17, 2007, the team secured qualification for the 2008 European Championship in Switzerland and Austria with their 2-1 away win in Scotland . For Donadoni's coaching career, qualifying for the European Championship finals is the highlight so far.

Before the European Championship in 2008, he extended his contract with the Italian federation by two years until 2010. The contract contained a release clause in the event that Donadoni does not lead the Italian team at least to the European Championship semi-finals. After the elimination in the quarter-finals of the European Championship against the eventual European champions Spain , Donadoni was dismissed. His successor was Marcello Lippi .

On March 10, 2009 Donadoni signed after a nine-month break, in which he had meanwhile been traded as a coach at several clubs in Italy and England, a contract with SSC Napoli , where he replaced Edoardo Reja . After a mixed season opener , he was dismissed as coach of SSC Napoli in October 2009. From November 2010 he was in charge of league rivals Cagliari Calcio , where he was released on August 12, 2011. In January 2012 he committed the Parma FC ; he signed a contract until summer 2013.

In 2015 Donadoni became the coach of FC Bologna .
