The Supercoppa italiana ( Italian Supercup ) is an Italian football competition that has been held annually since 1988 between the previous year's Italian champion and the Italian cup winner . If a club wins both titles, it competes against the previous year's cup finalists. The record winner of this competition is Juventus Turin with eight title wins.
The Supercoppa is organized by the Lega Nazionale Professionisti Serie A , a sub-organization of the Italian football association Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio .
The Supercoppa italiana was first held on June 14, 1989 - after the end of the 1988/89 season. The competition has been held before the new season since 1990. Normally the Supercup is played in the stadium of the Serie A title holder, but the game is often relocated abroad, for example to Tripoli in 2002 or to New York in 2003 . In 2011 and 2012 the finals took place in the Chinese capital Beijing in the national stadium there, after the competition was originally sold to China for ten million euros until 2014. In addition to the income for the league association, the participating clubs each received an entry bonus of 1.65 million euros.
So far, the cup final loser has had to compete eight times in the Super Cup because the other participant had won the double in the preseason in 1995, 2000, 2006, 2010, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018. With eight wins, Juventus is Turin the record winner of the Supercoppa . From 1992 to 1994, AC Milan was the only team to win the competition three times in a row.
