The Stadio San Paolo is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Fuorigrotta district of the Italian city of Naples , Campania region . It is named after the apostle Paul and is the home ground of the SSC Napoli football club . Since the renovation in 2019, the capacity has been around 55,000. This makes the arena the fourth largest football stadium in the country after the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium in Milan , the Olympic Stadium in Rome and the Stadio San Nicola in Bari .

history

The stadium was built from 1948 to 1959 and was inaugurated on December 6th of that year. At first it was called Stadio del Sole ( German  sun stadium ) and initially offered space for 87,000 visitors. A few months after it opened, the stadium hosted four games of the 1960 Olympic football tournament . In 1968 hosts Italy moved 0-0 after extra time in Naples by tossing a coin into the final of the European Football Championship . It was partially refurbished before the 1980 European Championship . The stadium was then completely modernized for the 1990 World Cup . It was given a roof, video walls and a new press stand, the floodlights and the athletics facilities were renewed and the safety precautions were adapted to the standards required by FIFA . This reduced the capacity by a few thousand places.

Regardless of the current capacity information, only a maximum of officially 60,240 visitors is currently possible, because for security reasons no more spectators are allowed into the wide area. At the end of 2007, the stadium was secured with an electronic access system, after only security personnel had previously validated the tickets at the entrance gates and it was not uncommon for people without a valid ticket to enter. In Diego Maradona's time around 100,000 spectators often came to the stadium, which was officially sold out with 82,000 spectators (for international games) or 85,000 spectators (for league games).

On May 10, 2016, the City of Naples approved the renovation of San Paolo. The renovation work should last two years until mid-2018 and cost 25 million euros. The public credit institution Credito Sportivo bears the costs . The renovation reduced the capacity from 60,240 to around 55,000 visitors. The first plans included the removal of the athletics facility, but it will remain in the stadium for the time being. The seating in the San Paolo will be completely replaced to meet UEFA requirements. The venue is to large screens , LED - display panels and a new sound system with sound insulation obtained. In addition, the changing rooms, offices, conference rooms and the sanitary facilities are being modernized. The video surveillance system will be renewed and the number of turnstiles will be reduced. There is also a new parking garage .

At the end of October 2019, Aurelio De Laurentiis , President of SSC Napoli, and the head of the sports department, Gerarda Vaccaro, signed a new lease for the stadium. The club and the city agreed on a term until the end of the 2022/23 season. In addition, there is an option for five more years until 2028. According to media reports, the stadium rent should amount to 850,000 euros per year. In addition, there are 50,000 euros for income in connection with the exploitation of advertising rights in the stadium. Another option is to use the San Paolo for commercial activities. A museum about football in Naples, in connection with the city itself, is planned on the site, said De Laurentiis. The SSC is responsible for the maintenance of the system. This has been a point of contention between the two parties in the past and should be resolved with the new contract.

The Stadio San Paolo has hosted many important games in its history, the most memorable of which was arguably the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup, Italy against Argentina , which the hosts lost 4-5 on penalties. Of all people, Diego Maradona , who played for SSC Napoli, scored the decisive penalty. The arena also hosted four other World Cup games. At the 1980 European Championship, there were some preliminary round matches, as well as the game for third place, which Italy also lost on penalties with 9:10 against Czechoslovakia .

The local SSC Napoli has also regularly ensured well-filled ranks in the past, since the inauguration, an average of more than 50,000 viewers have regularly come to the Serie A games of the Partenopei . In the 1980s, when the team had such great players as Diego Maradona, Gianfranco Zola or Careca in their ranks and won the Italian championship twice and the UEFA Cup in 1989 , the average was over 70,000 spectators. After the forced relegation of SSC Napoli, the number of spectators fell, but always remained at a level above average for the respective division. In the 2005/06 season, for example, the team had the third highest average attendance in all of Italian football in Serie C1 , the “third division” with 51,000.

In the summer of 2005, Ciro Ferrara celebrated his farewell game in San Paolo, which, however, became a minor matter when the 70,000 spectators frenetically celebrated Diego Maradona, who had come especially for this purpose, with the usual amount of pyrotechnics and chants, when he, surrounded by journalists, did a lap of honor through the whole Stadium turned.
