The Sardegna Arena is a football stadium in the Italian city of Cagliari in Sardinia . It is the temporary home ground of the Serie A football club Cagliari Calcio . The temporary stadium was built for the 2017/18 Serie A season on a parking lot of the immediately adjacent former Stadio Sant'Elia and on 10 September 2017 with the home game against FC Crotone(1-0) opened. With the completion of the new stadium on the site of the former Stadio Sant'Elia, the Sardegna Arena will be dismantled again and the area will be used as a parking lot again. The temporary construction cost eight million euros .

geography

location

The stadium is located in the south of the city of Cagliari, in the Sant'Elia district . It was built on the eastern and at the same time largest parking lot of the Stadio Sant'Elia, which was located on the western side in the immediate vicinity. While residential development adjoins the site in the east and south, it is bordered by a canal from the north.

Transport links

The stadium area can be reached by motor vehicle mainly via Viale Salvatore Ferrara , which connects Sant'Elia with the rest of the city, which is mainly in the north. In addition, the last stop of the bus line 6 Parcheggi stadio (German stadium parking lots ) is in the immediate vicinity .

history

prehistory

Since 1970, Cagliari Calcio played its home games at the Stadio Sant'Elia. However, after the audience interest in the games fell sharply in the early 2000s, a renovation took place. The previously existing athletics facility was built over with tubular steel stands behind both gates and on the back straight. This made a large part of the original stadium unusable. Towards the end of the 2011/12 season , safety concerns were expressed about the stadium for the first time and the stadium was declared inadequate. Then Cagliari Calcio had to play the last games of the season in the Stadio Nereo Rocco in Trieste , more than 800 kilometers away as the crow flies . Because of this, Cagliari Calcio moved to the Stadio Is Arenas in Quartu Sant'Elena for the 2012/13 season . However, as there were also security concerns at the Stadio Is Arenas, a game - which was considered a defeat for Cagliari - had to be canceled. The move to Trieste took place at the end of the 2012/13 season. The move to Quartu Sant'Elena, initially planned for three years, was abandoned and the renovation of the Stadio Sant'Elia began. However, since the work also extended into the 2013/14 season , Cagliari initially had to continue to play its home games in Trieste. The 2014/15 season Cagliari could then again at the Stadio Sant'Elia complete, but increased in the Serie B from. In the Serie B season 2015/16 , in which the promotion was successful, as well as the season 2016/17 , the team played all games at the Stadio Sant'Elia.

Planning for a new building

In December 2015, Cagliari Calcio presented plans for the first time to build a new stadium, which should finally solve the problems. The Stadio Sant'Elia is to be demolished to make room for a new building in the same place. The construction of the new stadium should last from 2017 to 2019. In order to continue to have a home ground in Cagliari during this phase, a provisional stadium, the Sardegna Arena, is to be built in the parking lot in front of the Stadio Sant'Elia. Parts of the Stadio Is Arenas are to be used for this purpose. After the completion of the new building, the provisional stadium will be demolished and resume its original function as a parking lot.

Construction of the Sardegna Arena

The construction of the Sardegna Arena started on May 3, 2017 and ended in September 2017. The construction of the provisional stadium cost 8 million euros and includes the construction of the field and the erection of four stands, most of which come from the Is Arenas stadium , which was demolished in the course of the construction project. The Sardegna Arena has a capacity of 16,233 seats, which is roughly the size of the Stadio Is Arenas.

Opening game

The first competitive game in the Sardegna Arena took place on September 10, 2017. Cagliari Calcio received FC Crotone on the 3rd matchday of the Serie A season 2017/18 . Cagliari won the game 1-0 with a goal from Marco Sau in the 33rd minute. Previously, Cagliari Calcio played the other two Serie A games away from home and avoided the match in the 3rd round of Coppa Italia against US Palermo on August 12, 2017 in Turin in the Olympic Stadium in Turin .

New stadium construction and demolition of the Sardegna Arena

The opening of the new stadium, which is currently being built on the site of the Stadio Sant'Elia and is expected to cost 53 million euros, was originally planned for summer 2019. In the meantime, a later opening date can be expected. As soon as the new stadium is completed, the Sardegna Arena will be demolished again.
