The Stadio Is Arenas was a football stadium in the Italian municipality of Quartu Sant'Elena , metropolitan city of Cagliari in Sardinia . For the 2012/13 season, the sports facility was rebuilt for the first division club Cagliari Calcio .

Cagliari Calcio

After months of negotiations with the city of Cagliari, the President of the Cagliari Calcio, Massimo Cellino, decided in May 2012 that the Rossoblu would no longer play in the Stadio Sant'Elia in the 2012/13 season for safety and comfort reasons . From the 31st matchday of the 2011/12 season , Cagliari played the home games against Inter Milan , Catania Calcio , Chievo Verona and Juventus Turin in the Stadio Nereo Rocco in Trieste .

For some time now, the club has been planning to build a self-financed stadium called the Karalis Arena . A plot of land near Cagliari Airport was chosen as the location . But this led to disputes with the aviation authority ENAC . On May 16, 2012, the municipality of Quartu Sant'Elena and the football club agreed to convert the Stadio Is Arenas to host the Cagliari Calcio for at least three years until the location of the stadium is clear. For this purpose, the dilapidated stadium with running track was torn down and converted into a football stadium made of steel frame stands (a covered main stand and three open-air tiers). The reopening took place in September 2012. In addition, 2,500 parking spaces were created around the stadium.

At the start of the 2012/13 season, the city council did not allow spectators to watch the first game against Atalanta Bergamo because, in their opinion, it did not meet the safety requirements of the first division. For the second home game on the fourth matchday against AS Roma on September 23, 2012, there was a scandal . The police chief of Cagliari, Giuseppe Balsamo, and the president of the Cagliari Calcio, Massimo Cellino, argued over the safety and stability of the tubular steel stands. In Balsamo's opinion, no spectators should be admitted to the game against AS Roma.

Nevertheless, the president of Rossoblu invited the fans to the game on the club's website, despite the ban. Thereupon the city administration of Cagliaris canceled the game out of fear of riots after a night session. The sports court of the Italian federation decided the next day that the canceled game would be rated 3-0 for AS Roma.

After a thorough inspection of the stadium with regard to security deficiencies that would violate Serie A regulations, the Italian observatory for sporting events gave permission to allow spectators to enter the Stadio Is Arenas on September 26, 2012. So the next home game could take place on September 30th against Delfino Pescara 1936 in front of an audience.

After renewed security concerns, Cagliari Calcio had to move to the Stadio Ennio Tardini of Parma FC for the last league game of 2012 on December 21 against Juventus Turin .

Before the end of the 2012/13 season, Cagliari Calcio left the Stadio Is Arenas after failing to adapt the stadium to Serie A requirements. The last home games of the 2012/13 season were played by Cagliari at the Stadio Nereo Rocco in Trieste . After negotiations with the city, the old stadium Stadio Sant'Elia was renovated and the football club returned to the Sant'Elia in 2013/14 .

After returning to the Sant'Elia , the Stadio Is Arenas was dismantled.
