The metropolitan city of Cagliari ( Italian Città Metropolitana di Cagliari ) is a metropolitan city in Sardinia . It is located in the south of the island and only borders on the province of Sud Sardegna .
The metropolitan city of Cagliari has existed since February 4th, 2016. In contrast to all the other metropolitan cities created to date, it was not created through conversion from a previous province, but through the formation of 17 municipalities in the province of Cagliari , the other municipalities of which are also assigned to the newly created province of Sud Sardegna were. This makes Cagliari the smallest metropolitan city in Italy in terms of both the number of municipalities and the number of inhabitants, and the second smallest in terms of area after the metropolitan city of Naples .
