The Province of Sassari ( Italian Provincia di Sassari ) is an Italian province in the Sardinia region . The capital is Sassari . It has about 489,634 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in 92 municipalities on an area of 7,678 km².
The province of Sassari was until the cession of 24 municipalities to the province of Olbia-Tempio (2001 by law, 2005 de facto) the largest province in Italy. When the Sardinian reorganization of local authorities came into force in 2016, the province of Olbia-Tempio was fully reintegrated into the province of Sassari. This makes Sassari the largest province in Italy again.
It is the province with the greatest density of nuraghi and its proportion of the Domus de Janas is very large.
