museum

history

Founding director Wolfgang Becker has been working closely with the Ludwigs, the collector couple, since 1968 , and from mutual ideas the city museum Neue Galerie - Ludwig Collection arose in 1970 in Aachen . It was one of the first museums for contemporary art in Germany and was initially located in the Alten Kurhaus Aachen . Hostility from the conservative side moved the gynecologist Hugo Jung and five other professors from RWTH Aachen University to found the Association of Friends of the Neue Galerie on February 9, 1971 . In 1991, the museum moved into the by Fritz Eller remodeled premises of 1928 in the Bauhaus style built in 1988 and laid umbrella factory Brauer and called himself Ludwig Forum for International Art . The Friends of the Ludwig Forum became the Friends of the Ludwig Forum .

Since the move, the focus of the museum has been on contemporary art. By 2011, the number of visitors increased to around 55,000 people per year. Since it was established in 2008, the Ludwig Forum has been a stop on the Route Charlemagne and a venue for the cultural festival across the borders .

The collection today comprises more than 3,000 works, mainly from the collection of the collectors Peter and Irene Ludwig, from all genres of art and from many countries. The Ludwig Collection is particularly known for its pop art holdings and its focus on American art since the 1960s. In 1977 the collector couple showed Pop Art for the first time in East Berlin. This led to a lively exchange with artists from East Germany. In the 1980s and 1990s, the Ludwigs traveled to Russia and soon afterwards began collecting the then current Soviet and Chinese art. Today many of these positions and artistic personalities are world-famous, such as B. Ilya Kabakov , Erik Bulatov , Huang Yong Ping and Ai Weiwei . In addition, an important collection of video art was built up in the house, around 200 works of which are now in the hands of the city.

Some of the objects are not missing in any encyclopedia on modern art history and thus belong to a kind of world memory of 20th century art. These include For example, the photo-realistic painting Medici by Franz Gertsch or the group of sculptures Bowery Bums by Duane Hanson , which shows three Bowery beggars in Manhattan . Both works were exhibited in 1972 at the now legendary documenta 5 by Harald Szeemann in Kassel. The Aachen Mona-Lisa , the hyper-realistic sculpture of a woman with a shopping cart , affectionately known as the Supermarket Lady , also comes from Hanson . Even the Ballerina Clown by Jonathan Borofsky , of the Ludwig Forum is built in the yard, looking far into the history and across continents. He has a twin in Los Angeles , on the roof of the Santa Monica Public Library , right on the Pacific Ocean. The clown was originally created for the Metropolis show , which is now regarded as a benchmark among experts , which was shown in the Gropius Building in Berlin at the beginning of 1991 and from which the work for Aachen was acquired on the occasion of the reopening of the Ludwig Forum in the summer of the same year.

The video archive includes a collection of around 200 video works by video artists such as Klaus vom Bruch , Peter Campus , Douglas Davis , Joan Jonas , Bruce Nauman , Nam June Paik , Ulrike Rosenbach , Wolf Vostell and William Wegman .

In addition to solo and group exhibitions by internationally renowned artists, the Ludwig Forum 2010 presented contemporary architecture for the first time under the title West Arch - A new Generation in Architecture . In 2011 the Ludwig Forum for International Art celebrated its 20th anniversary. The exhibitions Hyper Real - Art and America around 1970 and Never Again Trouble Free - Aachen Avantgarde from 1964 closed the arc from the history of the house and the collection to current artistic positions and issues.

management

  • Founding director Wolfgang Becker was in office from 1970 to 2001. Important exhibitions such as Klischee / Antiklischee (1970), Robert Filliou : Commemor (1970) and the Havana Biennale (1998) have taken place under his aegis .
  • Harald Kunde managed the Ludwig Forum from 2002 to 2008 and positioned the house with monographic exhibitions by well-known contemporary artists such as Sophie Calle (2005), Franz Gertsch (2006), Chuck Close (2007) and from the Atelier van Lieshout (2008) .
  • Brigitte Franzen was head of the Ludwig Forum from 2009 to 2015. At that time, the exhibition program and the presentation of the collection were based on annual leitmotifs, for example 2009 video / film and 2010 architecture and space . In this context, the Ludwig Forum has continued to position itself as an exhibition house and museum with a transdisciplinary profile. Franzen left the forum to act as the new managing director of the Peter and Irene Ludwig Foundation.
  • Andreas Beitin was director of the Ludwig Forum from February 2016 to the end of March 2019. What appealed to him about the task was the challenge and work with the company's renowned collection. However, he decided not to present the collection on his own in favor of temporary exhibitions. Beitin has set itself the task of further developing the Ludwig Forum as a living house. In the first half of 2017, the Ludwig Forum Aachen under the direction of Andreas Beitin more than doubled its number of visitors compared to the previous half-year. On April 1, 2019, he took over the management of the Wolfsburg Art Museum . Since April 1, 2019, Myriam Kroll has temporarily taken over the management of the Ludwig Forum. Under his direction, the exhibition "Lust of Deception - From Ancient Art to Virtual Reality", conceived by Roger Diederen and Andreas Beitin, became the most successful exhibition in the history of the Ludwig Forum with more than 43,000 visitors.

Awards

2017 - Justus Bier Prize for curators

Brigitte Franzen , Andreas Beitin and Holger Otten received the Justus Beer Prize for Curators for the Mies van de Rohe exhibition in 2017 . Both the project and the accompanying publication "Mies van der Rohe: Montage Collage, Ludwig Forum Aachen, Museum Georg Schäfer Schweinfurt, 2017" were awarded. The jury justified this as follows: “The Justus Beer Prize is dedicated to exhibition projects and publications that impress with their original topic and well-founded professional analysis. In the opinion of the jury, the project for the montages and collages by Mies van der Rohe was an exemplary success. Although Mies van der Rohe is a world-famous architect, whose work has given rise to countless investigations to this day, a systematic monographic overall presentation of his collages and photomontages has so far been missing. This is all the more remarkable as this part of the work offers a comprehensive insight into the thinking of Mies van der Rohe. The editors succeed in exemplifying precisely that panoramic aspect of this group of works. "

2018 - Museum of the Year

In 2018, the Ludwig Forum for International Art was voted Museum of the Year 2018 by the German section of the International Association of Art Critics (AICA) . The jury's reasoning: "Under the current direction of Andreas Beitin, the Ludwig Forum was particularly noticeable for its well-presented and researched thematic special exhibitions that show artistic trends of the present and the recent past in a new light and also illustrate cultural and political contexts."

2018 - Exhibition of the year

"Flashes of the Future. The art of the 68s or the power of the powerless. ”Was created by AICA Deutschland e. V. elected exhibition of the year 2018. “The exhibition, developed by Andreas Beitin (Aachen) and Eckhart Gillen (Berlin), unfolded a panorama of art around 1968 in all its styles that was never so comprehensive in over 200 works. While the memory of 1968 is mostly narrowed in political terms to the student revolt, the curators showed that the social upheaval that began in 1968 had heralded itself in art long before. An extensive catalog analyzes and explains the art, politics and society of that time in around 60 articles. Such a complete and differentiated inventory of the cultural situation at that time can probably only succeed after a distance of half a century. "

Library

The Ludwig Forum has a specialist library with around 51,000 titles on modern and contemporary art.
