Renate Puvogel

Renate Puvogel (* 1935 in Bremen ) is a German art critic and author .

Life and work

Renate Puvogel was born as Renate Schilling in 1935. She studied art history , German , philosophy and geography in Freiburg, Hamburg, Rome and Kiel. In 1984 she graduated with a Magistra artium in Aachen. From 1973 to 1996 she was a research assistant at the Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum in Aachen. Since 1973 Puvogel has been a freelance journalist and author for contemporary art with a focus on conceptual art , sculpture and interdisciplinary areas. She writes for various art magazines, newspapers and blogs. In addition to articles in "das kunstwerk" , ARTIS , Parkett , NOEMA , ARTIST , TAZ , Critical Lexicon of the Present and Goethe-Online , articles by her have been published regularly in the magazine Kunstforum International since the 1980s .

In 1993 Puvogel wrote a book about the Swedish artist and interior designer Carl Larsson, translated into several languages . In 1995 she published a volume with 20 artist portraits under the title Lehrgeld . It contains texts about Dan Graham , Thomas Schütte and Leni Hoffmann , among others . In 2002, 20 more artist portraits followed in the volume About Artists of Our Time . She wrote countless texts about contemporary artists such as Pauline M'Barek , Martin Kippenberger , Keith Sonnier , Tony Cragg , Jan Fabre , Kris Martin , Cony Theis , Peter Piller , Ruud Kuijer , Hans-Peter Porzner , Eva & , published in a wide variety of contexts. Adele , Ute Langanky and Cornelius Völker .

Puvogel has been a member of the German section of the International Art Critics Association since 1986 . She is a regular member of juries, from 2003 to 2007 for the Böttcherstraße Art Prize in Bremen .

Puvogel lives in Aachen today . She is married and has two children.

Awards

In 2002 Puvogel received as part of the Art Cologne the prize for art criticism , which the Association of German Art Associations awards in art journalists. The reason given was their openness to young artistic positions, praised for their “unconditional curiosity” as well as their “impartiality and committed participation”.

Together with her colleague Annelie Pohlen , Puvogel received the traditional Rheinlandtaler on July 10, 2018 at the Abteiberg Museum in Mönchengladbach , which honored her longstanding work for contemporary art in the Rhineland. It was emphasized that this work had both regional and international importance.
