Career

From 1989–1995 he studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy with AR Penck and Dieter Krieg , and in 1994 he was a master class student at Krieg . Between 1993 and 1995 he wrote the book, directed and produced the feature film Die Hermannsschlacht (together with C. Deckert, H. Kiesel, C. Köster and S. Mischer), which was shown in numerous German art house cinemas and at film festivals was performed.

The special characteristics of Cornelius Völker are the everyday things in life, which he often applies thick paint to the canvas with objects such as handbags, hands, sandwiches, chocolate bars, ribbed underwear, tea bags, a Zippo lighter, dogs but also swimmers in various poses . The banality of the motifs is deliberately set against a virtuoso painting. Content and form correspond to one another, the thick application of the oil paint symbolizes precisely this movement through smudging, streaking and color gradients. Cornelius Völker puts colors in various states, often parallel to what is depicted.

Cornelius Völker lives and works as a freelance artist in Düsseldorf . Since 2005 he has been professor of painting at the Art Academy in Münster .
