course
Eschwege - Mühlhausen
The B 249 begins west of Eschwege on the B 27 and leads through the western town, past the train station and over the Werra bridge to the northern bank. It is planned to relocate the route to the north in this area. In another route, the road runs past the Werratalsee , by the municipality Meinhard by the Werra to Wanfried , which received a bypass after reunification, the east leads around the old town. While the B 250 that begins here continues to follow the valley, the B 249 leads through the Elfengrund up to the Konstein , over which the state border with Thuringia , which is the former inner-German border, runs. Then it goes over a ridge between the valleys of Faulungen in the north and Haselbach in the south into the Hainich , which marks the watershed between the Weser in the west and the Elbe in the east. The village of Eigenrieden is located in Hainich , behind which the B 249 leads down into the Thuringian Basin . The city of Mühlhausen is reached at the Ecumenical Hainich Clinic Mühlhausen ( Pfafferode ). The B 249 meets the B 247 at Kiliansgraben in the city center . A southern bypass for Mühlhausen is being planned. It should branch off at the edge of the forest and lead past Felchta to Eisenacher Landstrasse.
Mühlhausen - Sondershausen
In Mühlhausen, after crossing the Unstrut, the level crossing with the Gotha – Leinefelde railway line , which was in a jam-prone crossing area, was removed and replaced by an underpass, for which the B 249 had to be swiveled slightly to the north. The road then leads through the Notter valley to Schlotheim . According to the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030 , the places along the route of Grabe and Körner are to be given bypasses, for which the B 249 would be relocated north. The following bypass roads for Schlotheim and Ebeleben have already been completed. In Ebeleben, where the B 84 to Bad Langensalza begins, the B 249 crosses the valley of the Helbe and then leads to the Hainleite . In the Bebraer Hainleitedurchbruch it meets the B 4 and ends a few kilometers before Sondershausen .
