The German federal highway 248 (abbreviation: B 248 ) leads from Northeim to Dannenberg (Elbe) . Here the B 248 ends in the city on the B 191 . Before that, a section, the B 248a , branches off and leads as a crossbar over the B 191 to the B 216 at the Streetzer roundabout. In Wolfsburg , the B 248, which was expanded to four lanes in the 1960s, is now the 39 federal motorway .

history

origin

The southern section of today's federal highway 248 between Northeim and Braunschweig was called Frankfurter Strasse in the Duchy of Braunschweig and was expanded into a fortified Kunststrasse ( Chaussee ) between 1786 and 1794 . In Northeim this road led to the B 3 , which was also expanded as a highway at the same time.

The middle section between Braunschweig and Wolfsburg was expanded as a Chaussee between 1805 and 1816 and called Berliner Straße .

The north connecting section between Wolfsburg and Salzwedel was built between 1853 and 1855 as Kreischaussee, which was built solely at the expense of the districts involved.

Previous routes and names

The section between Brunswick and Seesen was in 1932 for highway , from 1934 Reichsstrasse collected and as national route 64 , respectively. The National Highway 248 between Northeim and Salzwedel was set to 1937th

This federal road was interrupted in two places by the division of Germany and has only been continuously passable since the end of 1989, when border crossings were set up between Brome and Mellin (on November 18) and between Salzwedel and Lübbow .

Importance for long-distance traffic

The B 248 is very important for long-distance traffic between Northeim and Seesen. In the event of a traffic jam on the A 7 , which runs along the route, traffic will be diverted via federal highway 248. This leads to an increased volume of traffic in the adjacent towns.
