Course of the road

The federal highway 74 (abbreviation: B 74 ) is a federal highway in Bremen and Lower Saxony between Berne and Stade over a distance of 98 kilometers.

Route

The B 74 crosses the Elbe-Weser triangle , the area between the Weser and Elbe estuaries in Lower Saxony. It begins in Berne, is only closed after three kilometers by a ferry connection across the Weser and continues through Bremen. The route is formally interrupted by the A 270 in Bremen to the Bremen-Nord junction ( A 27 ). The course continues to the district town of Osterholz-Scharmbeck (32 km), further through Bremervörde (there briefly together with the B 71 and junction of the B 495 ) (71 km) until you reach the district town of Stade at junction B 73 (98 km) ends.

The first six kilometers of the B 74 run internally and in two lanes from Berne ( B 212 ( Bremerhaven - Ganderkesee )) to the Weser ferry and on the other side through Bremen- Farge . With the new construction of the Farge bypass, since December 9, 2009, motor vehicle traffic has no longer been hindered by barred level crossings in the area of the city of Bremen. Most of the course of the B 74 in Bremen's urban area was elevated to the A 270 motorway in 2001 , namely the 11.5 km of the four-lane expressway section of the B 74 between Bremen- Blumenthal and Bremen- Burglesum (9 exits, continuously without Hard shoulder).

history

origin

Sections of today's route were used as "military roads" by the warring parties during the Thirty Years' War . On her z. B. Danes and Swedes - coming from Stade - in the direction of Bremen before and back again.

On July 5, 1665 , the route was further "established" with the approval for regular mail traffic between Bremen and Hamburg (via Scharmbeck and Bremervörde).

The country road between Bremen and Bremervörde was expanded into a paved artificial road ( Chaussee ) in 1839 . The route was changed so that the road ran over Scharmbeck instead of Osterholz as before.

Previous routes and names

The trunk road 74 (FVS 74) established in 1932, renamed Reichsstrasse 74 (R 74) from 1934, led from Stade via Bremervörde and Beverstedt to Bremerhaven . Since 1937 the Reichsstrasse and later Bundesstrasse 74 led from Bremervörde via Osterholz-Scharmbeck to Bremen-Nord. On January 1, 1961, the B 74 was extended on the right to Farge and on the left of the Weser through Berne.

Replacements

The main road between Ritterhude and Stade largely follows the historical route. Only in Osterholz-Scharmbeck was it replaced by a two-lane bypass in 1970/71.

Planning

A continuation of the B 74 from Berne to Oldenburg , 24 kilometers away , was planned at times ; Corresponding plans to upgrade the existing L 865, which runs parallel to the Hunte, to a federal road and to partially replace it with a new road, are currently not being pursued. The only thing under discussion is a new construction of the L 865 between the village of Bornhorst and the Oldenburg-Ohmstede junction of the A 29 .

From 2010 to 2018 the construction of a northern bypass of the center of Berne for the federal highway 212, to which a new connection to the federal highway 74 will be made. After the Bern bypass road has gone into operation, the south-western end of the B 74 will be shortened by 3 kilometers.

To the east of the Bremen-Nord junction of the A 27, Ritterhude is to be bypassed on a bypass road in future. In May 2012, together with the state of Lower Saxony, the Osterholz district applied to the federal government to define the route for a Ritterhuder Ost bypass.
