The federal highway 21 (abbreviation: B 21 ) is a 22 km long German federal road in the district of Berchtesgaden in Bavaria .
geography
As part of the Europastraße 641 , the B 21 leads from the Austrian border on Walserberg (southwest of Salzburg ) in a northeast-southwest direction almost exclusively along the Saalach via Bad Reichenhall , Schneizlreuth and through the Wendelberg tunnel back to the Austrian border south of Melleck (district of Schneizlreuth am Steinpass ).
With this course it is the connection of the two Austrian federal highways Wiener Straße ( B 1 ) and Loferer Straße ( B 178 ) and is called the small German corner . Since 1957, Austrian vehicles have been able to use this federal highway as a transit route without any major formalities.

history
The forerunner of today's B 21 was the Reichsstraße 20. This was, together with others and initially still referred to as a trunk road, set up on January 17, 1932 with the route of today's B 21. It was one of the first imperial roads. The number 21 was also assigned, but for the road from Teisendorf to the R 20 near Mauthausen , today part of the 2103 state road .
The R 21 was relocated as part of a significant expansion and partial change in the Reichsstraße network until 1936, during which the R 20 was also significantly extended northwards via Marktl and Straubing to the Czech border. The previous route was rededicated, instead the now higher-tiered road from Bad Reichenhall to Berchtesgaden became the new R 21.
In the course of the expansion of the Reichsstrasse system to Austria, which was annexed to the German Reich in 1938, the R 31 coming from Breisach am Rhein and ending at the German-Austrian border between Lindau and Bregenz via Feldkirch , Innsbruck , St. Johann in Tyrol , Bad Reichenhall and Salzburg extended to Linz . Since this now also covered the route of the R 20 between Bad Reichenhall and the state border to the west, the R 20 was instead continued from Bad Reichenhall to Berchtesgaden. The number 21 that has now become available has been reassigned to the road running on Austrian territory from Lofer via Großglockner Strasse and Lienz in East Tyrol to the Italian border in the direction of Bruneck .
After the Second World War , the B 31, now known as the federal highway, was shortened to its original part in Baden-Württemberg. The no. 21, which is now free again, was assigned to today's B 21 at the same time.
