Marktl am Inn

Marktl (sometimes unofficially Marktl am Inn) is a market in the Upper Bavarian district of Altötting and the administrative seat of the administrative association of the same name . It became known nationwide as the birthplace of Pope Benedict XVI.

geography

Marktl is located in the Bavarian planning region of southeast Upper Bavaria on the Inn . The Alz flows into the Inn near Marktl .

Community structure

Marktl has 63 districts:

There are the districts Daxenthaler Forst, Marktl, Marktlberg and Schützing.

history

Marktl was founded in the 13th century as the Hofmark of the Counts of Leonberg . The Wittelsbachers had ruled the town since 1386 . Duke Heinrich XVI. von Bayern-Landshut granted the place market privileges in 1422 . Marktl was a nursing office and belonged to the Burghausen Rent Office of the later Electorate of Bavaria .

Until the abolition of self-government in 1808, it had a market court with its own magistrate rights. In 1818 today's political community was founded. In 1851 Marktl was raised to an independent parish. Since 1871 it has had a train station on the Munich - Simbach railway line. On October 3rd of the same year the Marktl volunteer fire brigade was founded. Since 1919 the place has been protected against the frequent flooding of the Inn by the construction of a water protection dam. On January 1, 1970 parts of the previously independent municipality of Schützing and on January 1, 1972 the municipality of Marktlberg were incorporated into Marktl. The administrative community between Marktls and Stammham has existed since the municipal reform on May 1, 1978. In 1989 the motorway connection to the A 94 was completed.

On July 13, 1997, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, who later became Pope Benedict XVI, was made an honorary citizen of the Marktl community. After his papal election in April 2005 and Marktl became known as the place of birth, a kind of state of emergency prevailed in the small town. Numerous journalists and visitors from all over the world flocked to Marktl and wanted to see the birthplace of Joseph Ratzinger. A memorial plaque is attached there. Overall, however, Ratzinger only lived in Marktl for two years; on July 11, 1929 the family moved to Tittmoning an der Salzach. On September 11, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI visited as part of his visit to Bavaria also his place of birth and there he entered the Golden Book of the place.
