List of all German license plates with a regional division

This list of all German license plates with a regional division includes all the distinguishing signs of the registration authorities, where certain groups of letters or numbers have been assigned to certain sub-areas (e.g. a district).

For example, with the distinctive sign BT for the city and the district of Bayreuth , certain groups of numbers that can be distinguished from one another are assigned. Since March 1, 2007, these number groups are not listed in the Vehicle Registration Ordinance (FZV).

There are also internal rules for assigning different number groups. For example, in the Central Ore Mountains District in the district of Zschopau, license plates of the type MEK A – Z 1–999 were assigned, in the district of Marienberg, however, those according to the pattern MEK AA – ZZ 1–99 . Many of these classifications, which were often carried out after area reforms, ended with the introduction of the desired license plates in the area concerned. The classifications that affect different administrative districts are often still valid today. Much of this information is given in the respective sections with the heading Historical classification .

Used letters

Not all possible letters and two-digit letter combinations are used in the vehicle identification numbers .

• From July 1, 1956, only the following letters were initially used: A, C, D, E, H, I, K, L, M, N, P, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y and Z. ( However, the letter "J" was entered instead of the "I" in the vehicle documents .)
• With effect from November 7, 1956, only the letter J was used instead of the letter I. License plates bearing the letter I were still valid.
• With effect from August 12, 1992, the letters B , F and G were also allowed. In the case of two- or three-digit combinations (e.g. B 87 or AF 9), however, they were only allowed to be used for motorcycles and for imported vehicles on which the attachment of another longer number plate was not reasonable for structural reasons. The city of Berlin was the first to immediately make use of the option of assigning the letters B, F and G for the eastern part of the city, where previously only six-digit combinations (e.g. NA 1234) were possible.
• With effect from May 26, 2000, the letters I, O and Q were also allocated . In anticipation of the introduction of the legal regulation in July 2000, the district of Munich was allowed to use these letters with immediate effect (I, O and Q each from 1 to 9999).
• Some registration offices (e.g. Cologne) assign the letter combination TX only to taxis and rental cars.
• So-called "brown license plates" such as B. HJ, KZ, NS, SA and SS should not be awarded, but are still issued by some registration offices. See the main article license plate .

In this article, the short form B, ... means that the letters B, F, G, I, O and Q are meant. If not all of these letters are meant, they are listed individually, e.g. B. B, F, G, I and Q .

groups

The possible identification numbers are divided into groups:

• Group a (formerly Ia ): 1 letter, 1–3 digits , i.e. A 1 to Z 999
• Group b (formerly Ib ): 2 letters, 1–2 digits, i.e. AA 1 to ZZ 99
• Group c (formerly II ): 2 letters, 3 digits, i.e. AA 100 to ZZ 999
• Group d (formerly IIIa ): 1 letter, 4 digits, i.e. A 1000 to Z 9999
• Group e (formerly IIIb ): 2 letters, 4 digits, i.e. AA 1000 to ZZ 9999

Superscript Roman numerals

If the same distinctive sign has been assigned to different registration areas without any reference to each other, it is differentiated in the list using superscript Roman numerals.

Colours

• yellow-orange: The classification still exists today.
• red:
  • 1.) The distinguishing mark is no longer awarded.
  • 2.) The distinguishing mark is no longer awarded for this registration district. Another registration area with the same distinctive sign exists and only issues certain identification numbers, so it is marked yellow-orange.
• green: The distinguishing mark will be reassigned in at least two registration districts as part of the license plate liberalization . There is a division.
