The district of Saxon Switzerland was a district in Saxony from August 1, 1994 to July 31, 2008 . In the course of the district reform of Saxony in 2008 , it was merged with the neighboring Weißeritzkreis to form the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district, with Pirna becoming the common seat of the district.
geography
The district of Saxon Switzerland was located southeast of the state capital Dresden . Adjacent areas were the Czech Ústecký kraj in the east and south, the Weißeritzkreis in the west, Dresden in the northwest and in the north the districts of Kamenz and Bautzen . The core area of the district included Saxon Switzerland , but also the foothills of the Lusatian mountains in the northeast and the forerunners of the Ore Mountains in the west . The Elbe flowed through the middle of the circle . The lowest point of the district was on the banks of the Elbe on the border with Dresden at 109 m, the highest point was the Oelsener Höhe with 644 m near Oelsen in the southwest of the district in the Eastern Ore Mountains.
economy
There used to be a lot of industry in the Elbe Valley around Heidenau and Pirna , for example pulp mills and the tire industry. These businesses disappeared, the areas were renovated and converted into small business areas. In Koenigstein the operational Wismut uranium mining. This was also given up and the corresponding mines were renovated.
Most recently tourism was an important branch of the economy with several health resorts, in Sebnitz there was an artificial flower production facility and a model railway manufacturer.
politics
The region hit the headlines negatively , especially in 2004 due to the above-average results (up to 26%) of the right-wing extremist NPD in the Saxon municipal and state elections . The skinhead comradeship “ Skinheads Saxon Switzerland ” (SSS) was founded in 1997 in the district. Its strength was estimated at 100 members in 2000. Due to its violent nature, it was banned by the Saxon Interior Minister in April 2001. However, the neo-Nazis remained very active in the region. Between 2002 and 2004 alone there were 930 right-wing extremist attacks, mainly against left-wing youths and foreigners, and around 600 reports were filed with the authorities.
traffic
Major international traffic routes of trans-European importance ( Pan-European traffic corridor No. IV), which belong to the axis Scandinavia-Berlin-Dresden-Prague-Vienna / Bratislava-Adriatic / Aegean / Black Sea, ran through the district .
Road network
Between Dohna and the German-Czech border near Börnersdorf-Breitenau , the federal motorway 17 touched the west of the district. The A 17 was completely completed in December 2006. In the north the federal highway 6 touched the district, along the Elbe the federal highway 172 ran . Other important roads were the federal highway 172a and the state highway 177 .
Road border crossings to the Czech Republic were in Bahratal to Petrovice , Schmilka near Bad Schandau to Hřensko and in Sebnitz to Dolní Poustevna . There were also a number of cross-border hiking trails and a cross-border ferry from Schöna to Hřensko.
Rail network
The internationally important Dresden – Děčín railway , which is part of the main line from Dresden to Prague , as well as its branch lines Sebnitztalbahn and Müglitztalbahn ran along the Elbe . Both routes are characterized by tight curves, climbs, tunnels and viaducts . Another branch line was the Kamenz – Pirna line . As a border station, Bad Schandau station was a stop for international trains.
air traffic
The next international airport was Dresden Airport . A gliding area was in Pirna-Pratzschwitz .
history
The district was created during the Saxon district reform on August 1, 1994 from the Sebnitz and Pirna districts and thus resembled the layout of the old Pirna administration (until 1952).
In a flood of the century in the summer of 2002 , many cities and communities were hit hard, first by the tributaries of the Elbe, then by the floods of the Elbe.
coat of arms
Blazon : On a green field a white (heraldic: silver) wavy band running from top left to bottom right (heraldic: from top right to bottom left).
- White wavy band: symbol for the dominant landscape of the district, the Elbe. Like no other landscape element, the Elbe has influenced the region in its structure, in its history as well as in its economic and cultural development. The Elbe was the geographic guideline for peoples and cultural flows, it was the starting point for settlement and traffic in our area and formed the basis for many indigenous trades. The Elbe is also a symbol for the district's diverse connections to the outside world.
- Green area: This is intended to express the high proportion of forest and its importance for the development of the area; also the high recreational value of the landscape as well as the fact that around 62% of the district territory is landscape protection area.
- Green area on both sides of the wavy band: reference to the two circles Pirna and Sebnitz , from which the new circle was composed. Color combination white / green: reference to the Saxon national colors.
