The city is about 12 km from Pirna and about 30 km from the state capital Dresden .
City structure / districts
The town consists of the districts located rechtselbisch Wehlen, village Wehlen and characters as well as the linkselbisch lying district Pötzscha .
history
In 1269 Wehlen was first mentioned as Wylin. The settlement was built under the protection of a castle , which Henry the Illustrious received from the Bohemian King Wenceslaus in 1245 . Wehlen was mentioned as a city (civitas) as early as 1346 . The castle has not been inhabited since 1543, so it gradually fell into disrepair.
The inhabitants lived from shipbuilding, handicrafts and quarrying . 1547 Wehlen was called "Amtsstädtlein" so that the basic rule was exercised not by a manor but an office initially Lohmen , later Hohnstein .
On July 31, 1848, the railway reached Wehlen (Pötzscha). Tourism began to develop since the Romantic era . In 1860 there were 48 guides .
Place name variants
The place name Wehlen is first mentioned in 1255 as part of the personal name Theodoricus de Wilin . It goes back to the old Sorbian basic form * Vel-n-, which can be explained in different ways. A first possible variant is the derivation of * Vel (a), the first name of a locator , with which the place name would mean "settlement of a Vel (a)". Variant two is that the place name is based on * vel-, an Old Sorbian equivalent of the Slovenian velna ('clearing') and it can therefore be translated as "clearing place". The third variant adds the place name to * vel ('nass, feucht'), which means that in German it would correspond to a "settlement on moist ground". The addition city , which belongs to the name of the city Stadt Wehlen , is used to distinguish it from the neighboring district of Dorf Wehlen.

coat of arms
A single-masted blue frame-rigged ship on waves and with a white background. The sail is shown blue and billowing and adorned with a golden lily . The lily comes from the coat of arms of the former lords of Köckritz. The pennant is also blue. Over the centuries the coat of arms was changed several times, but always while maintaining the basic scheme described above. The first city coat of arms was used for the first time between 1543 and 1547, as Wehlen became an official town with a city parliament during this time.
Woe song
The woe song was written by Hede Willecke, although the year of its creation is unknown. The song was set to music between 1962 and 1964. During these years Willy Bernhardt (himself a musician and conductor) was the choirmaster of the choir in the city of Wehlen. This text can still be seen on the south side of the archway on the building of the former Ratskeller .
You sunny Wehlen, you pearl of Switzerland.
