Hans Walther (onomastics)

Hans Walther (born January 30, 1921 in Oberfrohna ; † July 9, 2015 in Leipzig ) was a German name researcher .

Hans Walther passed his Abitur in 1939 and had to do compulsory service first in the Reich Labor Service and later as a soldier in the Wehrmacht in World War II . In 1944 he joined the NSDAP . In 1945/46 he took a course to become a new teacher and worked as such for a short time. In 1946 he began studying history , German and English at the University of Leipzig (from 1953 Karl Marx University). After completing his studies, he took up a position as a scheduled scientific aspirant. The doctoratetook place in September 1955 with Heinrich Sproemberg and Hellmut Kretzschmar with a thesis on the subject of the place and field names of the Rochlitz district. A contribution to the linguistic and settlement history of Western Saxony . In December 1968 he completed his habilitation with the work onenological contributions to the settlement history of the Saale / Elbe area up to the end of the 9th century . Reviewers were Karl Czok , Rudolf Große and Rudolf Fischer. In 1975 Walther became a lecturer and in 1978 professor for name research and settlement history at Karl Marx University. In 1986 he retired .

Walther did a great job researching settlement and field names, especially in the southern area of ​​the former GDR .
